Which turn-based strategy for me?

Hi guys,

I need a new turn-based strategy game. I have spend a lot of time on Civ 4 and 5, and just completed Xcom.

Any suggestions?

Literally the same second I posted this, a got a mail telling me of Endless Space on sale at Steam.

Tempting...

age of wonders shadow magic ($5 on gog till july 5th). The graphics are a bit dated but otherwise a good game - the fan made scenario are much better than the provided campaign.

Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes - not only is the advancement turn-based, so is the combat.

Fallen Enchantress is an awful and un-fun game.
2 games by 1C company: King's Bounty - The Legend, and Fantasy Wars.
Fantasy Wars can get pretty hardcore if you don't plan your moves well in advance.

If you don't mind a mix of turn based and real time... I would highly recommend the total war series. Rome 2 Total War is coming out soon. The strategy maps are all turn based and complex, the battles are real time. With the battles you can hit the pause button quite a bit which makes it feel less frenetic.

I found Fallen Enchantress fun and Kings Bounty boring, so it is all based on personal opinion.

Assuming you're a fan of TBS - What didn't you like exactly, just out of curiosity.

It wasn't a 'didn't like it', it was just not 'the best game ever' reaction most seem to have. I enjoy Civ more than it. Not easy to describe the reason in detail.

Just the gameplay experience seems 'ok', the tech tree seems generalized and to have gone through the same filter they use to make Star Trek: TNG script buzzwords.

It just seemed like a 'good' game more than an amazing game. And more evolutionary from Civ than revolutionary. I wouldn't mind playing another game of it though.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I ended up getting Endless Space. Feels mostly like an updated Master of Orion 2, but that is OK.
I will get Age of Wonders too, I think.

And yes, I did play Alpha Centauri - a lot.

EDIT: Hmm, regarding Age of Wonders - which one to get? Vanilla, Shadow Magic or 2?

Thanks, but it is much cheaper to buy them separately at gog.com. $12 as opposed to £20.

But will I ever play the first game if I have #2? If no, there is no point in buying it.

it may not be relevant to you, but i'm now playing "Disgaea: Hour of Darkness" (PlayStation 2) and i'm on my 120th hour playing it and i'm maybe half way through the game 😀

it's TBS, you control up to 10 characters on each map (which you have to outfit with gear as well!) and you have your tanks, spellcasters/long range artillery guys, healers and monsters (dragons, vampires) you also control. characters level up but also improve skills as they use them.
the plot is kinda silly (so it the whole game, very anime-style silliness) but it's SO addicting! and battles on certain maps can go up to an hour long.

Stardrive would be the competition. I'm still undecided between the two. Though I haven't' played Civ5 yet.

There's a bunch of great ones on consoles/handhelds. Final Fantasy Tactics, Ogre Battle, Disgaea, La Pucelle Tactics, Phantom Brave, Fire Emblem all come to mind.
