green. Green is a guarantee that the intersection is safe to go through without checking for cross-traffic.
Think about it. Start with an unsignalled intersection...people will always slow down and look both ways, since you never know if a car is coming.
Add a red light-they will stop at the red, however if the light is off it could be a downed power line, or it could come on at any moment.
Yellow is obviously unnecessary.
Green tells you that it IS safe to proceed, and you can drop your guard and go through.

black is always the most important color...
i still don't understand the reason of the blue light tho.
anyways, i don't see the point of lights having to flash before they turn red (for pedestrians) or the red and AMBER (not yellow, the color that people think is yellow, is actually AMBER) going on at the same time, and then lights going green.
also, turns on red are an american system. don't know how it is safer, but i think it's better to have independant turn signals, i.e.: lights with arrows
Tough call. If we had just red lights, things would still work but it would be basically the same thing as having only stop signs. Green lights along would also be useless, because it would be the same thing as no sign at all.
Yellow lights have practically no meaning, though I would argue that a traffic system that consists of solely yellow lights and stop signs would have more possibilities than stop signs and red or stop signs and green. Though just barely!

Well thats because you're not colorblind. During the day, if the light is not bright, it can be extremely hard to tell which light is lit up.
If the car is stopped because it is a red light, by adding blue to the green light when it is lit, it helps people pick up much easier that there was a change in color.
Also, if you cannot tell if the red light is lit (coming to an intersection), you can look at the green light to see if the color looks slightly off.
