Which trade would be a good one to get into?

I'll be done college (CS) this summer. So far the prospects look pretty horrible (both job quantity and the $$$ if you find one). Too many people in tech these days. Don't get me wrong--I love programming. Been cranking out code for a dozen years for hobby. But because of the influx of people in tech, the pay has dropped lower than most trades and the requirements have skyrocketed (10 years experience in x, 8 years experience in y).

I've thought about becoming a lineman or CNC operator. Would either of these be decent fields to get into? Community college here has a 1 year "CNC Programming" certificate program I was looking at. Don't know how useful that would be though.

Looking for some advice and recommendations ;)

Become a cop. That'd be awesome.

It is awesome, but he doesn't strike me as the type.

My dad laughed when I said I wanted to do the Policeman ROP thing. :|

As huge a nerd as I am, I sure would love to be a cop or a part of the SWAT Team.

Just about any trade that has a low prospect of being outsourced to another country.

It takes years to get on a "SWAT" team, and even then you have to be extremely competative.

If spelling counts, you're definatly not in the running. ;)

Whoops. It'd take a few more years on the street before I would be considered, anyway. Plenty of time to enter spelling bee after spelling bee, proving my worth to you.

Still, I'd be down. I'm really interested but I've also got something else that's going really well for me so it's tough to choose.

I programmed, setup and operated CNC mills for 25 years, but the company took a shlt after 40 years in business. Went back into the "building trade" doing renovation and misc. carpentry for about a year. Now, I'm in a high production job shop, supposedly to be a CNC programmer, but I'm merely loading parts, with minimal set-up and programming.

Too much of this work is being sent to China, etc. Basically suffering the same fate as most fields. I'll probably end up doing carpentry again before long...

Well, realistically you're worthless to me anyway. You can keep trying though. :D

It can be really hard to get into LE in the first place, so if you have something solid already you probably shouldn't abandon it completely.

Don't become a CNC operator; that is as mindlessly boring as can get. It is production line operating and you'll just be loading part after part for machining and making sure everything is within spec. When it gets to the high or low side of spec, if you're allowed to, you'll just be changing out a tool or making a minor adjustment.

CNC programming is different as you'd actually be writing the code for the machining process, but I don't see how that would really be available as you'll need to have machinist training as well. I don't see how the school can offer a real potential with a one year CNC programming course. Most likely you'd have to start as an operator and if the company has a training program, you might be able to advance to CNC programming once you learn more about general machining.

Would it help if I showed you pictures of Nebs on his knees in front of me in the laundry room?

That would just turn me on. Make sure you wear the uniform.
I would really love you if you held a cocked gun to his head the whole time.

Please stop, I'm out of tissues and the towels are all dirty.
