Hmm, I'm in the same boat as you techface. I'm in the process of building a new rig right now and once I finish, it's gonna have to last me for some time to come without any upgrades. I haven't purchased a cpu, mobo, or ram yet, but was considering the Q6600, x38, and 4gb DDR2-800 PC6400 ram, but after reading this thread, I'm not so sure if I should drop that kind of money now.

i just discovered the same thing...intel coming out with new CPU in Jan, X38 is still a little immature. Two hous ago i didnt even know about existence of X38...i was going to get P35....but now i read that X38 is already out...and even more to come with DDR3 support "soon".....as well as Nvidia GTS 512 MB "coming out soon".

Once i build i build for some time...i am also heavily overclocking...so this should last 2-3 years probably. Then better wait for mature X38 boards, so, instead of building now probably middle january is better....

I agree with flexy, middle of January seems to be the right time to go for a new machine. A lot of new stuff will be out by then including new Penryns, 780 boards & G92 based 8800GTS cards. It is also possible that X48 boards with FSB1600 & DDR3-1600 support will be out by then. Intel has been sampling the chipset to mobo manufacturers for quite some time now and word has it that this is just a revised X38 and should fit on existing X38 boards without the need of any changes made to the board. With prices of DDR3 going down it makes sence to wait until then. I know I would if I was looking to build a new system.
