Which to upgrade to, Celeron 700, or PIII 700?

I'm running a Celeron 333@450 right now, and am thinking of upgrading. What would be the most sensible upgrade path for me? a Celeron 700 costs $300 (final), and a PIII700 is ~$390 (final). I will need a sloket as well as a new heatsink/fan combo as well. I want to know which would be able to overclock to a higher speed (I would guess the Celeron since its only running on a 66Mhz bus origonally), and at that speed, will the Celeron still be as slow as my current 450Mhz compared to a PIII?
😛

P3, definitely. I paid $300 US for my cb0 FC-PGA, & it's currently running nicely at 966/138. With my PEP66/Delta it does 1001, but I don't like the noise.

Before the P3 I had a Celeron 566 @ 952. It was pretty quick for the money, but I like the P3 much better. If I was going to get a Celeron, I'd get either a 566 or a 600. The multiplier on the 700 is WAY too high. (Unless that's a 100 MHz Celeron, but those aren't available yet, are they?) Celerons perform well with high FSB's, my 566 @ 952 was running at 112 MHz. The 700 is going to limit your FSB to around 95 - 100 MHz. The performance won't be as good as a 566 or 600 on a 112 FSB.

?! Forget about the celeron, overclocked or not! The Celeron 600@900 for instance, does scores what the original Athlons did at 600MHz. Huh!
PIII overpriced compared to Durons and Thunderbirds.

Okay, I'll ditch the thought of the Celeron for sure then. I wasn't expecting it to be on my list, but then I saw the price difference, I had to consider it (my budget is about $400 max). As far as multipliers go, am I correct in thinking that the 7.0 of the 700 is going to be a better one for overclocking? Would I be able to get similar speeds out of a 600 or 650.

I'm guessing that these come with a fairly wimpy heatsink/fan on them. If I'm planning on overclocking, how much would I be looking at for a good hs?

If you are going for the OC of a PIII chip ALLWAYS go for the "E" model, meaning the 100 Mhz. Trust me I have been there with a "EB" (133Mhz) chip in my hand and trust me it is not a pretty sight.

I went after a few tryies, direct back to the shop to claim, my still using 600e. By the way great chip.

If your getting a Celery grab the 566 or 600MHz Celery, the multiplier on the 700MHz Celery makes overclocking too difficult. The Celeron might be able to clock a bit higher than the P3 700 but even at overclocked speeds it would barely be competitive against the P3 700 at it's rated clock speed.

For the extra $90 for the P3 you will be gaining much more speed than the Celery will be able to manage. I say go with the P3 definitely.

also i notice you said PII700 for 390bucks final your in canada so is that like around 200bucks im not that smart sorry cause i got mine PIII700 for 200bucks here 1month ago i assume now its probably $190 or so.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm definetly going to go with the PIII. I haven't found a better price anywhere yet, so this seems to be a good deal. I'm going to check to see if I can find out what stepping it is before I buy, and make sure that it is retail and not OEM.

Does anybody know about the HS/fan they come with?

--BTW, all the prices I listed were after 14% tax as well, so I guess the price is pretty good after the fact.
