Which to get... Biostar TForce6100-939 or MSI K8NGM2-FID - 939?

Which will overclock a 3800+ X2 better, be more stable, and perhaps be used for a HTPC later on. Since neither on has DX10 I'm thinking that either one would require a video card update and even a better sound card.

Nuts, this just sounds like I'm trying to predict too much. I think I prefer the better OC reports of the Biostar which has vcore settings in the bios.

with MSI board + X2 3800 your maximum CPU clock is going to be 2.5 GHz, because MSI BIOS would only allow you to increase HTT Speed up to 250MHz... So 250 * 10x multi of your CPU = 2.5 GHz

with Biostar board - it is 6100 chipset, so I guess it is 100Mbit LAN, not a GbLAN like MSI's 6150 chipset. However, if Biostar board has CPU vCore options in BIOS, it may give you a bit better OC compared to MSI board.

There is also Foxconn board based on the same 6150 chipset as MSI board, and that Foxconn board is considered to be the best overcloker among all 6150 chipset 939 socket boards.

If I were you I would get a Foxconn board and try to get a bit higher than 2.5GHz. (however, I have exactly that one MSI board with X2 3800 and I have no problems with it at all. It runs overclocked to 2.5 GHz at stock volage/cooling)

One thing I neglected to add to the original post was that I have 2 gigs of DDR and a Thermalright X-90. Because of the hs I'm thinking I should use it to extend my OC to its possible max.
Also, I feel I need to nullify the OC advantage the C2D has over this rig by OCing the sh** out of it. I saw the AT article comparing the X2 to Intel's latest and I want to feel like I'm not throwing my money away, and OCing kinda does that for me. But I can't do this without the idea that the more mature 939 is going to provide stability along with that OC whereas the c2d is both bleeding edge and the mobos are very expensive, or atleast the better OCers.

Lastly, whether it's wize or not, I usually use the replies by Newegg customers to get some stats on how well the various motherboards perform. I don't like to go for a board that shows less than 70% for the "excellent" vote. Also, I check the dates and try to note which of the boards(or items) has had positive comments during the current month. Sure, not everyone makes the best decision, but so many of newegg's customers are, I believe, experienced and worthy of at least a read.
The Biostar rates 70%, the MSI K8NGM2-FID gets 65%, and the Foxconn 6150K8MA-8EKRS rates a 64% in newegg's "excellent" vote.
Nevermind, that's probably a load of krap.

I'll probably use this for a while and then give it to my girlfriend, but not until I can get a first rate c2d setup at a sweet deal. I can't imagine ever using gigabit networking, and I can't see any real advantage of the 6150 over the 6100 as neither one will satisfy when playing a real game.

I just wish I knew which, between the Foxconn and the Biostar, is the better overclocker.

OC aside, the Biostar mb won't work as an effective htpc with it's 6100 based onboard video, because it doesn't support the critical hw accelleration (MPEG2 decoding, deinterlacing, etc) for SD/HD TV displays like the 6150 based chipsets DO. Check nvidia website for chipset/video card feature-set comparisons.

It will require an additional video card.

Huh? What will require an additional video card?

Experience HD video at new, affordable prices?NVIDIA PureVideo technology provides stunning, high-quality video playback and superb picture clarity. NVIDIA GeForce 6150 supports H.264, VC-1 and MPEG-2 HD-Video Playback formats.

Taken from nVidia's website
Benefits as outlined at nvidia's website

Is it just me, or did Newegg's price for Foxconn's 6150K8MA-8EKRS just drop in price AND now includes a rebate? link
