What is the best deal for a video card.

6600gt for $163

or

x800xl for $279

if i get the 6600gt i would possibly be able to upgrade in 6 months or so, but if i get the ati im pretty much stuck for a year atleast.

edit: i play World of warcraft mostly and at 1024x768 or 1280x1024. my current monitor is only 17in. i would like to upgrade to a dell LCD later but not ATM.

i need pci-e since im getting a new comp. i play WoW and the comparison anadtech made was only about 5 fps difference between the ati and the nvidia. doesnt seem worth it for $100

I agree, and if you were not going with a new board already, I'd say, don't bother switching to PCI-E for the sake of PCI-E, but you'll have to make the move eventually, so I gues now's a good time.

But yeah, I've had 5 ATI cards out of which, three have been absolute dogs (and one has never been used for 3D so it doesn't count). I'm three for three on rock solid nvidia cards. That said, I'm sure you could find 50 ATI fans w/ the opposite experience.

Nevertheless, if the two cards are benchmarking close, why spend the $100? Put that money towards an LCD or a nice wireless KB/Mouse combo 😀

eVGA 6800 128MB AGP = $194 shipped.

Now that I look at the WoW benches, you would only get ~7 more frames with a 6800 Ultra then you would with a 6600GT! However, for almost all other games, the 6800 will perform much better than the 6600GT. It's really your call, whether you think you will be playing many other games, and whether that $20 bucks is worth it to you.

thx guys for all the help. Seems pretty clear everyone says go with the 6600gt. 6800 would be nice but i think if i keep it 6600gt around christmas i could get a new video card from the next generation =)

funny im in teh same spot as you. i chose the 6600gt. in a year or 2 that extra 100 can be used for a much better card. the 6600gt is fine. u just may not be able to turn on 4x aa on 1280x 1024 on many games (doom 3). xl you CAN turn on 4x aa on most games but its just not worth the extra 100 especially on a 17 inch monitor :\
