Which to buy: SH6 or a P3V4X?

I currently have a Cu P3 600, running on a BH6 MB at 802mHz. The system is stable, cool and effective, but I want to look at a "better" board... tax time means upgrade time, right?

So my debate is, do I go with an older "proven" P3V4X, or take a chance on a newer SH6?
The P3V4X seems to have gotten over its' earlier 4 in 1 driver troubles and settled into a great unit -but who wants old technology if the new stuff kicks it ass? Then again the SH6 is new and from reading this forum may have "issues" with certain video cards.

I want to stick with a Slot1 config, because I'm running the CPU listed above, and with better RAM, or the ability to clock the RAM bus and the CPU bus indepedantly, I *know* the chip can go higher.

Any input from you pros?

The P3V4X is a great board, but it's quirky and gives what you put into it. If you want to just drop it in and go, you'll get basic, unimpressive performance. But, if you're willing to tweak it, you'll get insane performace from it. I run a P3-700E at 1035 MHz on one.

Keep your Abit. The upgrade is not worth the cost unless you are having problems now. The via chipset is nice but it's not a performance leader and the SH6 will cost mucho $$. Also, you will not see much performance increase if you have to reduce the speed of the ram to get a small cpu increase. Good luck.

I had my P3 650 running on a BH6 @806. Couldnt overclcok any higher then that. Then I got a P3V4X and its now running at 924.

Im interested in a direct comparison of these boards also. The biggest difference Ive seen from the specs are memory bus speeds. Does the Asus board have problems running the memory at fsb of 150+?? There doesnt seem to be a way of seperating the cpu and mem bus speeds on this board like the abit has.

Craze, youre fsb is ~142, is that what youre running your mem?


Also, the abit comes with an extra set of USB ports. Not a big deal but could be useful.

Go with the ABIT SH6. I have a PIII 550 overclocked to 825mhz with the help of a golden Orb. This board rocks NO PROBLEMS. I just recently upgraded from a BE6 Really Happy

Get the P3V4X if you are a normal user,or get the SH6 if you are a scientist (or if you just like pain)

Another vote for the P3V4X. It is a great board but as ppl have said, it requires a bit of tweaking to get the most out of it.
