This is going to be used for school work mainly. i need wireless access.
They are mainly the same.

on IBM's website they both retail for $2500 CDN. But im getting the P4 2.2 for $1600 and the centrino 1.3 for $1800

The P4 has a bigger screen and better video card but does not have wireless included, ill need to buy a card from IBM.

Im not sure whats the better deal.

What are the dimensions and weight? Or does it not matter? Will it basically be a desktop replacement?

I'd consider a low end T40 like the 2373-19U. It'll be a lot lighter than the R40, and sturdier too.

If you have to choose between the two, I would go with the 15" LCD one since AFAIK, the casing for both R40 is the same size and 14" LCD will look rather small for the same casing. The price is also cheaper while have similar performance (P4m 2.2GHz is faster than P-M 1.3GHz though). If you want a similar spec but a better design, consider T40. There is one model that come with P-M 1.3GHz, 14"LCD, 32MB M9, and cost about $1800-1900. I forgot the model number but someone here ordered one before so they should be able to guide you though if you want a T40.

if ur are talking about the T40 series, i would go with the Centrino all the way. 1.3 has comparable performance to the P4 2.2. the p4 has sh*tty batt life and runs relly hot. u won't go wrong with the t40, i am loving mine more and more everyday.

anyone has benchmarked this where I can see?

it's really interesting how the centrino's performance if it can beat p4 2.2

To be more accurate, I think the P4m 2.2GHz is faster than P-M 1.3GHz (P-M 1.6GHz is about as fast as P4M 2.4GHz based on the Toms benchmark and comparison about three or four months ago). But the P-M will have better battery and run cooler. And I agree with the others that T40 design is much better than the R40 series (I have R40 here in my department as well).
