Which tablet? HP Pavilion tx1000z or Lenovo ThinkPad X61?

So my ThinkPad is about to go kaput on me after 3 years (RIGHT after the warranty expired), I'm looking for a replacement and would like to get a tablet. I wasn't able to configure the two laptops exactly alike for comparison purposes but below are the configurations I would purchase.

HP Pavilion tx1000z GD617AV $944.48
Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)
AMD Turion(TM) 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL-60 (2.0 GHz, 512KB+512KB L2 Cache )
12.1" WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display(1280 x 800) with Integrated Touch-screen
2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 6150
802.11b/g WLAN and Bluetooth
160GB 5400RPM
SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

ThinkPad X61 Tablet Series 7764CTO $ 1,387.80
Windows Vista Ultimate
Intel® Core? 2 Duo L7500 LV (1.6GHz, 4MB L2, 800MHz FSB)
12.1" MultiView + MultiTouch WVA XGA TFT, 2x3 UltraConnect II antenna
2 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)
Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
ThinkPad 11a/b/g Wi-Fi wireless LAN Mini-PCIe US/EMEA/LA/ANZ and Bluetooth
120GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm
No Optical Drive
4 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

Is Intel®Turbo Memory hard drive cache (1GB) worth the $37.50 extra?

Summary:
A few years ago I would never have considered an HP, but after checking them out in person at Digital Life I was impressed, they seem to have improved a lot. Is the extra $400 or so worth it for the ThinkPad? I would get the following for dropping an extra $400.

Slightly better operating system.
Not sure how the CPUs compare, but I'm guessing the Intel chip is a bit better.
Lower resolution non-wide screen. X
Integrated graphics. X
Get access to 802.11a networks (haven't seen many of them, not much use).
40gb less harddisk space. X
No optical drive. X
Shorter battery life. X
Probably much lighter and a bit smaller.

All signs point to the HP as the better deal but I honestly don't know how the Turion performs. Sounds like the HP screen is much better too. Anyone care to voice an opinion? I'm torn between the two, both will meet my needs. Thanks!

I see your point - sort of a toss up, but...

The lack of an optical drive and $450 higher price tag would be a deal breaker for me! 😉

If you're worried about the Turion 64 X2, I would put that fear to rest. Sure... no bragging rights, but who cares?

Personally, I think HP is making better products these days, but IBM has lost control to Lenovo. Kinda sad really...

I'd go with the HP!

Just found this: http://www.tabletpcreview.com/default.asp?newsID=966

Reading up on the 23.2% Thumbs Down reviews for the HP, only 5% Thumbs Down for the ThinkPad...

The fact that the HP tablet isn't pressure sensitive sort of kills it for me. Might have to go with the IBM since I'll probably be using it for a lot of Photoshop work. Really wanted to support HP though. DAMN...

I work at a staples and i've had plenty of chances to play around with the hp tx1000. I was recently looking for tablet pc to use for note taking in class, and ended up going with the gateway c 140x. It's a bigger system but it's a great machine and i'm not dissapointed i bought it.

MAJOR difference between the wacom tablet on the gateway (and i am fairly certain the x61 uses wacom too) and the HP touchscreen... after using mine i feel bad recommending the HP to customers who want tablet functionality... You have to apply a decent amount of pressure to get a decent reading, and it didn't seem to recognize all of the input, also, you can't lay your hand on the screen while writing because it's a touchscreen. Really, the HP seems like a joke after playing with one with WACOM.

Out of the two i'd definitely go with the x61, or if you want to look into other options within that price range, the c 140x starts at 900 after instant coupon and alternatively gateway also has a smaller and lighter 12.1 starting at 1200.

If you want tablet functionality DON'T go with the HP! 🙂 just a warning!

Soooo...

Basically, this is rounding up to be another example of "getting what you pay for", yes?

Funny how that always works out... 🙂

I ended up sticking with the T-series. I intend to get a tablet, but waiting on Apple and Dell's upcoming offerings. IBM / Lenovo is in the dog house. My T61 timeline:

10/16/07 Ordered
10/25/07 Shipped
10/29/07 Received
11/27/07 LCD Problems / white screen with stripes

i like hp's design much better, and would be happier with the extra 400bucks in my pocket as they are very comparable, but thats just me

And for anyone else looking at this, on slickdeals there is a 30% off coupon plus the Paypal promo. IIRC it knocks the HP tx1000 down to around 7-800 depending on config

It is interesting that Lenovo now offers a choice of OS - it is not required to go Vista - they now are offering XP Pro as the OS. That says something.

There are some good prices being touted for year-end sales on the Lenovo store site.
