For regular tasks (90% of the time, no video encoding or intense apps), which system would feel faster running win 7?

System 1
i7 920 with HDD

System 2
Core 2 Quad Q9550 with SDD

Assume both are overclocked decently.

number 2 obviously. your only performance metric here is loading data from disk to RAM such as programs. it goes to number 2, hands down. you aren't putting the CPU to work so you cant say that the more powerful i7 could ever be apparent in this test, but that doesn't mean you should invest money into a new 775 build. what else are you using the machine for? you're much better off investing in the i7 platform now and getting an SSD when you can afford it. it'll last you longer than the 775 system.

I play a lot of online poker, 4-8 games + data tracking software (uses posgres sql server). I do video encoding with camtasia, which takes 6 hours for a 1 hr video (athlon 64 :)). Visual Studio 2008 pro compiler. Otherwise, just browsing, movies/music.

I don't mind forking $ for the i7 920 + SSD if the extra power is used. It should help with the camtasia and probably VS 2008 too right?

it'd pretty much come in handy mainly with camtasia. your multitasking performance would be similar to the q9550. depends on if the SSD is there.

For video encoding you can't beat the i7 920. But for database ish and general performance you also want to get the SSD. Might as well get the Intel X25-M G2 as well. So ya, get the i7 920 and the X-25M. And also get a D0 stepping of the 920, put it in a good case with a push/pull lapped TRUE and overclock it to 4GHz. You'll be encoding vids in 30 min.

Neither?

Cheaper s1156 mobo (there are already lots) + i5 750 or i7 860 + SSD.

Depends entirely on the SSD and the HDD. A Raptor will feel faster than some crappy SSD and a pair in RAID-0 will give it even more of an advantage. Alternately something like an X-25M G2 will wipe the floor with a Raptor.

hopefully when someone says "SSD" they refer either to the X-25's of vertex-barefoot-based disks.
