Cliffs Notes
Should I keep my opteron 246, MSI K8T Master2 FAR and 512MB gigaram, in hopes of eventually getting another processor for it. Should I sell it and go for the cheaper dual Xeon route, with obviously less power, and no 64bit support. Or should I just dump it in favor of a single A64 and lots of memory? I am not a power user, I do some gaming, encoding, heavy multitasking.
I am not a power user, so I don't need top of the line speed. A DP system appeals to me, because I am a heavy multitasker, well that and all the DP users out there say once you try it, you never go back. SO I had decided on a dual opteron system. I had planned to start with just 1 CPU,and add another later. SO I got an opteron 246, and MSI K8T Master2 FAR, and 512MB gigaram. LIke I said, I ahd planned to add another cpu and stick of ram when money permited.
Flash forward to today, money has been tight and isn't looking to get any better, and to top it all off, I think I need a new power supply, as well as some other parts to get another rig up and running. SO I see in hot deals that I could get a pair of 1.6 Xeons(that seem to easily be doing 2.6 for 120.00 bucks. I could pair them with an Asus PC-DL motherboard, and see how high they will go, as well as some nice ram. The way I see it, according to newegg anyways, my CPU, motherboard and memory sellf or like 750.00. SO if I can get 650.00 out of them even. that should easily cover the cost for the Xeons, motherboard and ram, and leave me some cash left over for the other parts I need.
While that would be nice, since I am trying to get a network setup to play on, I don't want to lose a lot of performance, since I know I would already been losing 64bit support. I suppose anothe roption would be to sell off my current parts and try for an A64 single processor system, since the speedier opteron and memory have made a big improvement in my system. While it would still be nice to have DP's, I may be able to live without them, if it gets me a network setup.
SO which would you choose?
