Really depends on what class/price category you are looking for.

There's a very wide margin depending on the size of vehicle you want.
 
I've seen some Subaru Foresters rated at about 26MPG. That's actually fairly respectable. That's only a couple MPG away from a nissan sentra.

Ford screwed up when they didn't mount the gas cap on the roof of the excursion. You could just call in a refueling chopper that way and fill up once you got 100 miles away from the gas station.
 
I rented a brand new Excursion once. Cost $75 to fill it. It's a strange feeling looking at the tops of suburbans as you pass them by.
