I guess this question matches this forum best... Tried asking on Amazon, and the answers don't understand the question, and Amazon won't even let me reply to them, which inspires great confidence. Tried asking Amazon and Roku, and they clearly didn't understand the question either.
The first gen FireTV left Wifi Direct pairing mode on 24/7, and I believe bluetooth too, if I'm remembering right. That's incredibly insecure, and I got rid of the thing because of it.
From what I can tell, Roku actually handles this pretty well. Apperently you can ONLY initiate pairing mode through the menus manually, or else by rebooting the device-it's in pairing mode for 30 seconds after the OS comes up, which isn't a terrible way to do it. Not as good as having a physical button on the box, but decent.
I'm guessing Apple does this okay on the Apple TV, as they are normally security focused, although I don't actually know, and the pairing instructions sound like maybe it's always in pairing mode.
I'm seeing conflicting info for FireTV devices. It sounds like they dumped wifi direct as a thing, and some instructions on Amazon sound like you can only use the menus to activate pairing mode...but I've seen some stuff acting like it'll pair if you just leave the remote pairing for a minute, meaning it actually is always in pairing mode.
Anyone know? Thankfully Microsoft does this right on the Xbox One, with a physical button. I'd seriously consider buying an S as a streaming box if I could still get it for the $200 price it sold for last month. For more than that it feels too expensive to waste on streaming, when a $40 gadget is basically as good.
