Due to the standards in which our society is built upon, we live in a world that has people stereotyping everywhere. Of course, myself being asian, I am familiar with the ones such as:

"Hey, I don't know you, but can you help me with this calculus problem?"
"Hey, I hate Asian drivers, and even though I don't know you, I bet you drive a fixed up Civic LX"

These two normally come to mind, and even though I'm a bit flattered by the first stereotype (because I am somewhat competent when it comes to academics - math especially) - I am annoyed by the constant assumptions that since I'm an asian guy who's in his late teens, w/ ashy brown hair that he drives a rice rocket. (I drive a frickin' 88 Camry!)

Anyways, to stick to the topic, I'm sure that Anandtech has a diverse group of represenetatives from many different cultures - tell me, which stereotype annoys you the most, or pleases you the most?

One steretype that sort of annoys me is that chicks think I'm so darn hot. I want them to see me for who I really am. :(

On a more serious note (well, the above one was serious ;)) I find it sort of annoying that people think Hispanics are "Spanish" or stupid immigrants. I'm caucasian, but it's something that I still find a little bit annoying.

The one sterotype that annoys me most is that people think that asians are always smart and hardworking people that are really rich. I think that is wrong...

Hahahahah Robert, thats fricken hilarious.

The stereotype that I hate the most is that all the baby boomers consider all teens to be pot smoking, drug dealing, alcoholic s|-|it disturbers. Little do they realize that most of the teens in the world today are respectable. The reputation of a few bad ones ruins it for everyone else. You never hear about the kid that saves a dog from the river, or gets a 98% average in school, but you hear about the number of kids failing miserably or the kid that broke a window.

The news doesn't do a good job reporting ALL the news. They know what people want to read, and it isn't all those happy-go-lucky stories that happen in the world. Frankly, it annoys the crap outta me.

Samgau, are the people making these assumptions other asian indians? Or are they other people to begin with? Because I usually am not able to tell based on belief who belongs to what order? Because it would make sense if other Asian Indians are making these "assumptions" but it would be funny if other people who know little about the culture are making these assumptions based merely on your appearance. =(

Cenalian - funny how your avatar is a hippy =)
I definitely agree with you when you say that the bad kids stand out so much more than the good kids that people forget that today's youth is truly a "respectable" community.

However, for some reason, the bad always stands out more.. dunno why... lets take McVeigh for example... he was a brilliant person... his act was nothing less of psychotic, but he was a smart guy nonetheless with many accomplishments in his life... he goes and does one stupid thing and look at him now... what do you remember McVeigh for? You remember for his O.C. bombing... not much else.

Thats because the media knows the general public will respond more to the bad news than the good stuff. If they only reported on the good things going on in life, no one would watch the news or buy the paper because they would compare that to thier life and realize theirs isn't so great. By reporting on the bad news, it makes people think thier lives are fine and dandy, and they will continue to read/watch because it'll make them feel better.

Sad, but it works.

Hmmm... y'know what else makes sense is that even if the media reports the good news, there will always be a good ammount of people whose response would be jealousy. Therefore they might try to pick up dirt on the people and try to taint there reputation in someway. I know it sounds sad and pathetic, but that's just how our society works today

Whenever i join up a game in CS... usually im #1 on the list and those idiots keep on saying that i cheat.. when im on a server with ppl that can actually play, then they dont do that.. but all these n00bs call me cheating and stuff. it doesnt bother me much but its one of those stereotypes that, "if you kill me, then you must be cheating".

well, i must say my good ping (usually under 50) and good speed computer (40+ fps even under biggest firefights), and quad speaker setup with MX300 does give Tremendous advantage over the kmart bluelight special with Ragepro, but i dont cheat god damn it!! ^_^

MustangSVT (name of my first GT3 car =) anyways yeah, once I joined a server that had a motto on the screen before I joined that said,

"WE don't CHEAT - YOU JUST SUCK" (it was their clan motto or something)

So I entered and it was the usual, our clan versus you guys... so I go out and I kill them all and go up around 7-0 or something... then I get booted... kinda lame if ya ask me =)

Generally people that fit stereotypes annoy me. I don't label people I don't know, but if they go out of their way to make it clear that the obvious label is the correct one, then I get annoyed.

Aren't the vast majority of Indians Hindu?
Why would people think that you are Muslim?

Cyberian, not too sure why people think he is a muslim while the majority of the culture is hindu... nonetheless, it just continues to show how nonsensible these stereotypes are. I'm sure that they are judging on his appearence in some way and drawing the conclusion that he is a muslim...

I mean when people think I'm chinese or mixed, I get a bit bothered because I'm proud to be fully Vietnamese.. however, I can understand that Samgau's situation might be a lot more annoying... we're talking about judging one's appearence and then immediately proclaiming him to be a part of a culture/religion.

I am Indian too. India is a mixture of various religions but more than 80% is Hindu. I think the reason why people brand Indians as being Muslim is because of neighbouring countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan, which are prodominantly Muslim. India also is a neighbour to Tibet and China. The term 'Asian' in general is thrown around a lot. When I first moved to the US it was kinda difficult to convince people that I was Asian. (Really, I am ;))

But all in all, people have it much worse in India where descrimination is based on religion. The cast system is long gone but Christians are always prefered in certain educational institutions. Although the majority of India is Hindu, the level of competition is so great that people of alternative religions are sometimes better off. :(
