So after a long time of trying to convince the g/f to try watching a Trek movie, I finally convinced her to do it. Now my problem is this; which movie to I rent to show her? I'd kinda like it to be one with the original cast, but I don't know if that would be the best one to show...maybe Generations? First Contact? What do you guys think?

I think star trek 4 would be best for a newbie. Star trek 2 is best appreciated by someone with a bit of prior knowledge of star trek, IMO.

Khan. It is definately the most "standalone" and theatrical movie that will appeal to non-trekkies. Maybe First Contact, but there's quite a bit of 'trekology' in there, albeit less than most others.

I agree. The scenes where they interact with people in the 20th century are hilarious.

the Wrath of Khan
The Voyage Home
The Undiscovered Country

if she cries about spock dying... then she may also want to see the search for spock... but i really doubt it.

i voted wrath of khan but after reading the OP i'd have to say the voyage home is probably the most chick-friendly movie.

I personaly like 4, but if you have never seen star trek you won't understand most of the joke since the viewer would need to have knowledge of past star treks. IMO the newbioe will be lost.

Many or most of the jokes are future guy comes to the past and has trouble using the mouse type stuff. I don't think you need to know the history to get those. It's your run of the mill fish out of water stuff.

Actually, none hold a candle to the series on TV IMO. I would vote for the one with the whales.

To all those who said Khan, I don't think that would be the best on simply b/c you need (or at least really should) have prior knowledge of the franchise to get that movie.

Also, based on suggestions, I'm leaning towards either The Voyage Home or First Contact, but more suggestions are always appreciated :)

For a newbie, definitely watch First Contact. You don't really need any prior knowledge as the borg in that movie are different than the borg in the series. Khan is good but the effects may turn you off since the movie is ~20 years old. Once you get into star trek then you can go back and watch the earlier movies.

It's gonna be hard to get a girl to like Star Trek. If she isn't into action movies make her watch 4 as there's almost no action in it and it's funny. The whale is nice. She'll prob get totally bored in the beginning though. But then 4 is the last part of a 3 movie arc so it might be confusing.

I'd say Wrath of Khan first, then First Contact. Depending on what your girlfriend needs to get hooked. First Contact has some nice effects, Khan has a better story.
