Which SSD for SATA2 MB?

I currently have an older 128GB Vertex 2 SSD attached to me X58-base motherboard. It does fine for what it is but with prices dropping I'd like to upgrade to a 256GB drive. I'm going to pick up a SATA3 SSD but wasn't sure about spending the premium for something like the Samsung 840 Pro series over the standard 840.

What would you recommend I grab?

Depends on your usage model, but in reality outside of benchmarks you will struggle to notice the difference between any of the top of the range SSDs.

Just remember that the primary difference between the 840 and the 840 Pro is NAND endurance. If you are a very heavy user who writes GB's a day then the 840 will not be for you.

Typically I'm your average user/gamer. Outside of the storage dance I've had to do with games (128GB fills so quickly) I don't do much heavy lifting.

Do you think something in the middle - such as the Crucial M4 - would provide noticeable difference from the 840?

The m4 is the oldest of the current generation drives and Crucial are the last major player not to introduce a newer model. It's most likely only a matter of time.

If you can't get an 830, go for an 840 or 840 Pro or look at a Plextor.
