The 540s are just an update.

I think the main difference is the 540s have matrix mode which would allow for fake surround from a 2 channel source. Not a big deal if you're hooked up to a computer.

The woofers on these logitechs have had a run of broken parts - the tube connecting to the woofer port being badly glued and arrives broken after shipping. Yeah they can be fixed but the shipping is more than the speakers; opening them on your own a serious trail and often damages the boxes severely. I used many a pair of the 2.1 version in workshops and then left them as favors - people are very impressed with them - when they work!

Swans are hard to find but sound great. Check ars technica guides for more alternatives. Amazing speakers.
