I listen to music and play games in about equal amounts, which speakers would be best for me?

2.1:
Logitech Z-3: £62
Altec Lansing 2100: £55
Altec Lansing VS4121: £55
Creative I-Trigue 3600: £84
Creative I-Trigue 3400: £59
JBL Creature II: £69

5.1:
Logitech Z-640: £50
Logitech X-540: £49
Altec Lansing 5100: £77
Any of the millions of creative 5.1 Inspire variants that cost about £40-50

loads of options, but i guess i don't really know what i want out of these...

i think i will get the altec lansing 5100s. are these any good, or should i get something else? z-640s or x-530s or something? (also, would 2.1 be better for music at the same price?)

I agree so far. I havent looked too hard but I havent seen any.

I bought a set of Creative Labs 5.1 Inspire 5500's. 5.1 setup with a DD decoder. Im not a big audiofan but I really appreciate it for DVD's and even music sounds a lot better to me.

a bit out of my price range, unfortunately...
£80 is absolute max. it's pointless to give a price in dollars cuz speakers are much cheaper there anyway...

£1 is something like $1.90 now as well. Given that they usually have newer tech earlier, the older tech decreases in price and such, I agree its near impossible to compare with any degree of accuracy.

I wish I could find a way to make a whole PC lighter so that I could ship one to me in the UK and also avoid the VATman. The price difference these days is criminal :(

i am going to buy them soon:

1) any opinions on the 5100s?
2) are the x-530s better/worse/the same as the z-640s?
3) would i be better with 2.1s at the same price?

I'd get 5.1

The 2.1s you listed arent great like Z2200/2300 or Klipsch 2.1 but then again they dont cost a lot.

It'd be much harder to compare Z2200 to Z640s.

X530s should be improved z640s I believe. You cant go to any store and listen to any of these side by side?

5100s should be pretty loud compared to others but back in the days they didnt' fare so well for the price.

What about Creative Labs Inspire T5400? I think they even have replaced model with T5900 model.

yes, found the T5900s. and they're £54 which is fine. you would get them?

it's quite hard to find anywhere with a decent selection of speakers except online, so no i cant compare.

Yes the 5900s would be good. I think Logitech makes more boomy speakers if you like bass. Creative usually makes clearer sounding speakers though. I am sure 5900s would be good. I own 5300s from 2001 and they have been alright. Unless you are an audiophile, you'll be content.

Here are the reviews for the older 5400 model:
