I have a 2003 Chevy Silverado 2500HD 4 door crew cab and a couple of speakers are busted so I am looking to replace them. Would I be better off replacing all four of them? I believe I have 6.5" speakers all around.

I do not want anything high end at all. In fact, I am perfectly happy with the factory sound. I am using the factory stereo. I do not want any high priced speakers, the cheaper the better. But I also do not want to buy absolute garbage either. What brands should I stay away from?

I looked at Best Buy and they had a decent selection. The cheapest ones they had were Kenwoods which would be $64 for four of them. They also had some Pioneers and Alpines for $50 a pair. I just don't know what is junk and what is good. I figured I would do some shopping online and I found these, http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-New-BOSS-...860975548?pt=Car_Speakers&hash=item51b0f19dbc. Am I wasting my money of these? Are they so cheap because they are not good at all? What do you recommend?

Would I be wasting my money on getting 3 or 4 way speakers on a factory system?

I plan on installing these myself or having a family member do it for me. Money is pretty tight right now so less than $100 for all four would be good.

Neither of those links work.

I didn't notice this until today but it looks like the front speakers also have a tweeter. Does that have to replaced the same time as the speakers? I wouldn't think so but I am not sure of anything anymore.

Would I be better off buying two better quality speakers for the front instead of buying all four of them? I don't intend on replacing anything else.

I like Polks but the ones I got were $100/pair which is more than you want to spend. One money saving suggestion I do have is to order from crutchfield. They give you the brackets and adaptors you need for the installation.

I didn't think I would need brackets and adapters since I am sticking with the stock size.

Yea anandtech is messing up the links.
The speakers are the
Pioneer - 6-1/2" 2-Way Car Speakers with Composite IMPP Woofer Cones (Pair)
Model: TS-G1644R SKU: 3438938
$29.99 for a set.

How many speakers does the truck have? There are 3 major options 4, 6, and the Bose system. Also does it have onstar.

I am pretty sure I have 4 speakers, 1 in each door. It looks like the front speakers have a separate tweeter. Would that need to be replaced? I do not have the bose system or onstar. Why would having onstar make a difference?

Also, I was told by someone at Bestbuy that I would not need any adapters or brackets since I am installing the same size speakers. Is this true?

Memory, sounds like Crutchfield might be good for you. Go to www.crutchfield.com and enter in your vehicle specs, and they will give you a list of speakers that fit your vehicle. All brands on there are good enough for what you want to do. Since you will not be running an amp, you would not benefit from anything better than basic 2-way speakers. Kenwood and Pioneer are two good mid quality names that you should be looking for, IMO. The Kenwood KFC-G1620 that they reccomend would be my choice for you, they are $39 a pair. Crutfield also includes a bracket (if needed), instructions, and a wiring harness for free. The harness makes life easier, you can just unplug your old speakers and plug these ones in. Without the custom harness you would have to cut the wires or spice them.

Also if the tweeters are not part of the speakers you are replacing, you would not need to do anything with them.

I would just read some reviews, and buy a set that fits your vehicle on sale. If you are not picky and you're just using the stock stereo, you have tons of options.

Off the top of my head I would say Alpine Type-S line.

Go to Crutchfield or SonicElectronic and pick yourself any pair that has Rubber Surrounds.

Stay away from crappy brands like Jensen, Pyle, Boss etc

Stick to decent brands like: Polk, Kicker, Kenwood, JVC, Clarion, Rockford etc

You should be looking at $40-50 a pair....

I guess it would depend on which 2 of your 4 speakers are bad but have thought about just disconnecting the bad speakers and only using the remaining 2? You mentioned money is tight so that would be the cheapest thing to do. Just a thought.

I have a 2003 Suburban which is essentially the same as your interior wise. I also used 6.5" replacements and had to use brackets in the front, haven't done the rears yet. When you are buying speakers like manufactures do you can have them built with "bracket" as a part of the speaker. Also using an adaptor keeps you from hacking off the factory stuff. Aftermarket are generic and typically need a bracket of some type for most installations.

I'm not sure how your speakers got 'broken'. But, if money is tight, you want a direct fit, and you were happy with the originals, I'd check with a junkyard first. It shouldn't be to hard to find a set of the same speakers (maybe even a bit newer) that will fit, work, work well, and be less than $100 for all four.

I went ahead and bought four Kenwood KFC-G1620 speakers from Crutchfield.

When I say broken, I mean one doesn't work at all, no sound and the others sound terrible. When I try to turn the volume up, it sounds really bad.

I would definitely replace all 4. That way, they all sound the same, "voice matched".

That said, if money is an issue, and you have two working ones, put the two bad ones in the back doors, put the two good ones in the front doors, and fade the output to the front.

Edit: I see you ordered from Crutchfield. Not the cheapest place, but they will send you every bracket and adapter you need to install the speakers, plus detailed instructions.
