Which sound system for HTPC

I am building an HTPC system this winter. I am an experienced system builder but have no idea about the sound reproduction side of things.....

I need to get a decent surround sound setup....possibly THX ( 5.1, 6.1, 7.1??) or better for watching DVD's but don't know which computer components to look at ...

Basically I am asking....which soundcard (audigy 2/ other etc??) and which set of speakers......I'll set a limit of about $500 but a little more or little less won't hurt...

Will a soundcard in a PC have enough power or will I have to get a separate amplifier.....(money can be found for this....but don't need to know which amp in this question)

I would ideally like wireless rear speakers if possible.....can normal Hi-Fi speakers be used with a PC soundcard (see I'm losing the plot)?

Thanks in advance for any help..

Is this a normal PC with computer speakers?

HTPC + movie watching would lead me to look at real systems.

IE: HTPC w/ XMystique soundcard, Receiver like the Pioneer 1015TX (for example) then say 3 pairs of Rocket ELT (300$) and a subwoofer ($xxx)

If you want an all in one solution for sound, there are some HTIB solutions that are right around the $500 mark.

Onkyo 780
or
Rocket Tykes

would include a receiver, sub, and speakers for that price.

I don't know if those receivers have 6 channel direct input on them or not, so if you needed surround sound in games, you'd need to get a card like the X-Mystique to encode DD in real time for decoding.

Do you have a decent soundcard already?

If you're just going to be music and movies though, you don't need anything fancy. Even if you're only doing limited gaming you could get away with a much cheaper card and get "fake surround" from your receiver.

Chaintech AV710 would be a good card for music/movies and would leave you more money to spend on the sound system compared to other cards.

Oh, and about THX you mentioned, don't worry about that. It's mostly marketing.

5.1 vs higher.... 5.1 works just fine (it's what I'm using). You can go higher, but if doing so is going to reduce the quality in favor of quantity, then it's not a good idea imo.

If you want to do separates, it's going to cost you more than a HTIB, but you'll be able to put together a better system, you'll have more options, and if you like researching stuff it can be a lot more fun.

You could try to do wireless rears, but it's going to cost you a lot more to get something that does that well.

How big is this room going to be? High ceilings?

If you want a really awesome system someday and might want this to just be the first installment in the final system, you could get a nicer stereo set going now and then add to it later. You'll only have 2.0 initially rather than 5.1, but if you spend your budget on a receiver and two speakers now, you'll be able to get much nicer stuff than if you bought everything at once. I don't know if that appeals to you at all.

If you don't want to do a HTIB but want a 5.1 system right away, I would also suggest checking out Rocket ELTs like Tiamat suggested.
Here's a thread I started about them
I think this is the best $100/pair speaker set you're going to get. Three of these and you'll have a 6.0 set to start with.
Some others in this range would be
Infinity Primus 150s
Fluance SX-HTB 5.0 set

You'll need a receiver for any of these (your soundcard will not work on its own).
Refurb receivers are a nice way to get a nicer receiver than you would have been able to get new.
There are a lot of refurbs out there for pretty cheap.
Onkyo receivers from ecost are one source. They have a 6.1 TX-SR502 for $149 now... bunch of other ones too.
Harmanaudio on ebay sells factory refub HK receivers with a new 2 year warranty.
Anyways, lots of options out there. I got the older model of the one Tiamat suggested for $287 as a floor model for example.

For a sub, I would suggest the Dayton 12" for a budget one. I think it's really hard to beat for the price. If you want to spend more, you can even get two of them and load up a corner of your room (or wherever sounds best, placing two can be a bit tricky).

For other info and suggestions, check out AVSforum and Hometheaterforum. They're like the HT equivalent of what Anandtech is to computers.

Check out dolby for speaker placement.

Oh, and don't spend too much money on cables for hooking things up. Info on speaker wire for example...

Just to clarify..... I already have 2 PC's that my wife an I use for gaming....This system will be just for media applications...... Will probably do encoding on our A64's so doesn't have to be too powerful....Will be replacing DLink DSM-320 media centre, stereo( 5.1) Hi-Fi, DVD player, VHS video etc...just cleaning up my room a bit.

I am using parts out of my old PC that was still playing games up until about 2 months ago.....

Athlon XP1800 (already have)
1.5GB RAM (already have)
Motherboard (already have)
400GB HD drive (may add more..)
PVR card...(yet to buy...looking at hauppage pvr 350...will have 2 of them...) any better suggestions
Need to buy case.... (looking at Ahanix d-vine range or silverstone) any suggestions?
802.11g network
Silent PSU (need to buy this) recommendations?
Graphics...have choice of 2 old cards radeon 8500 not AIW or a FX5600 ultra ......UK doesn't do HDTV yet so don't need AIW HD decode/encode

I want to overall spend about £1000 ( around $1600-$1800) but money isn't too much of a problem so am flexible.

YOyoYOhowsDAjello....thanks for all your effort...that must have taken you a while....very informative and useful

Room is 16ftx16ft with 8.5 ft ceilings

System is intended to be a system to build on.....i.e am looking forward to adding HDTV support in a year or so when the UK starts HDTV broadcasts.....once I have a case I like I can pretty much do what I want down the line....but there is no point in spending a fortune at the moment on HDTV support if I can't get HDTV signal.

As far as what soundcard I have got at the moment goes.....I have a soundblaster live that was in my old PC but am using that in my A64 instead of NForce 4 onboard sound.....BF2 didn't seem to like it much...

I will check out the sites you mentioned...

thanks alot for all your help.

Room isn't too big
You shouldn't have any trouble filling it with sound.

If this is just for a media pc without gaming the Chaintech AV-710 would work quite well if you want to get a new card.

For a silent PSU, I'd suggest a Seasonic S12 series. Something like a 380 should be plenty for that system.

I didn't notice you were in the UK. I'm not sure how many of my actual product recommendations are going to be applicable over there

Being from the UK can sometimes be a problem on these forums.....but all suggestions are welcome and appreciated as it gives me a better idea of manufacturer and the types of specs that I should be looking for.....I then go away and research.......most things can be found in much the same guise in the UK as in the USA sometimes under different brand names....all it takes is a little research.....Plus some places actually ship to the UK if you ask them...

I don't really know of any UK based sites or sites with a large UK clientelle that come close to Anandtechs informative and diverse membership base unfortunately....

Thanks again

Did I mentioned AVSforum and Hometheaterforum yet? If I didn't I should have.

Not necessarily for being British, but they are much more HT oriented than AT is.
