Which sound card, or does it matter?

I am in the process of upgrading from a 200Mhz AMD machine to a XP2700 rig.

I have a set of Cambridge SoundWorks speakers, with left channel, middle channel (woofer), right channel setup that I would like to use on my new machine.

All of the 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 designations are foreign to me.

What I really want to do is just replace my very old Sound Blaster card from Creative Labs.

Do I stay away from the " 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1" stuff altogether? Or I buy just about any card and it will have instructions for setting up what I need?

As always, thanks to all of you for your helpfull replies.

You've described a 2.1 channel setup, wit hthe 2 channels (left and right) and the .1 being the subwoofer. Assuming that you buy a decent motherboard, it will have onboard sound, which will support your speakers and let you save some cash. Many people (myself included) can't tell the sound difference between a sound card and onboard.
