So our 8-9 year old leather couch (don't know which brand) is biting the dust, 2 of the 4 springs on my side have totally broken and another has slipped out of the clip, I'm only 180 lb btw. I've been looking at couches and they're pretty damn expensive and I'm afraid I haven't even been looking at the "good" brands. I was thinking of a couch and loveseat but I may have to stick to just a sofa, we have another chair in the room I'm not replacing. I was looking at a nice La Z Boy sofa that was $1900 plus tax which I thought was a lot but thought it was a good brand but now I'm reading of a lot of negative feedback on them over the last 5-10 years. I've pretty much abandoned the loveseat so I can put more $$ into the couch. I was looking at reclining couches but would be open to stationary if they're going to last a lot longer. Budget is $1500 - $2000 for a full grain leather sofa, which brand to get?

I went through the same thing several months ago. Did La Z Boy have anything on sale while you were there? We ended up getting the Clark La-Z-Time® Full Reclining Sofa on sale for $799.

This one: http://www.la-z-boy.com/product/6727-8373/Full-Reclining-Sofa/?search=440340

We don't use the recliners on the end but since it does have recliners the couch has a nice high back, which I love. Either haggle for that price or wait for a sale maybe?

Edit: I see you are only looking for leather, but at least that'll give you a price point.

Well it wasn't a la z boy store so I can't say how good of a price I got. To me $1900 for the sofa seemed to be quite a bit, other nice couches from less known manufacturers have been around $1200 for a similar setup. Our city isn't really large so we may have to drive to Nashville one day to see what else we can find.

OP, am going through the same hell that is furniture shopping. I too am shopping for a leather couch/loveseat. The whole experience has shown me that furniture shopping is much more painful than car shopping. Depending where you live you can ge cheap for less than $1,000 or good for $2,500 or more. It all depends upon where you live and what your expectations are (as in how long you expect it to last).

One thing that I have noticed is that there are some really good manufacturers who specialize in a particular style AND that are local to only one area of the country. For example there are "Scandinavian" style stores all over the country BUT their stuff is only available in 2-3 states. It sucks but what are you going to do?

Furniture shopping is the pits. You can spend thousands on furniture that is worth little/nothing once it is delivered to your house.

Thoughts for cloth: Build the sofa carcase myself. That way I know it's substantial and not cardboard/particle board/held together with 1/2" staples etc. Buy the material and let a local upholstery shop cover it. Maybe buy one in the right style at a 2nd hand store, strip it, beef it up and off to the upholsterer. $1K cloth and all? I have no idea other than the construction quality will be better than most.

Lane makes some of the cheapest stuff I've seen that like la-z-boy is also US made, wood framed, hd/hr foam etc. Much cheaper than lzb, but not as many available features/reclining options.

I was trying to remember the brand, the last time I looked at sofas I saw several now that put individually pocketed coil springs inside the cushions, like some mattresses. Both were really impressive, much more firm yet responsive & comfortable feel than just foam + sinuous springs underneath for example. I just doubt the long term durability of pocket coils in a sofa. Worse than a bed, putting more weight on a smaller area over & over.

No pocket springs here, & not that I put much if any stock in furniture warranties, but with lifetime on everything except upholstery flexsteel construction looks pretty solid. Not too much cheaper than the lzb you looked at though. (Flexsteel "Whitney")

I've been pretty happy with the stuff I find at Value City. I recently got a 3 piece reclining set for $1300 that's pretty solid. It's not real leather, but it's dark brown vinyl type stuff that feels & looks close enough for the cost savings.

I pointed out before that furniture stores are often willing to bargain with you just like a car dealer. Find exactly what you want, go in, and ask, "what's your best price on..." I had a very well known store with dozens of locations along the east coast give me a significant discount on a well known name brand of furniture.

It's like mall jewelry shopping. The sticker prices are almost always super inflated. (though, there are exceptions, some stores will be noticeably cheaper because they don't bother with those games)

We had *Flexsteel* make a sofa for us 8 years ago. Without a doubt one of the best pieces of furniture we have ever owned! Extremely comfortable, yet remains firm. So nice not feeling the need to have someone help you up out of it. I am too old for bean bag chairs.

So you got it at a 50% off sale? The sofa is $1,400 right now ...
if i remember correctly we did pay around $700 for it, then tax and delivery probably brought it to 850ish... There was a sale on certain colors of it a few months ago.

Well I'm finding a lot of price variation on the La Z Boy unit we looked at, the local place is $1899, the La Z Boy gallery is $2499 and another independent store is $2299.

Looking at the Flexsteel offerings I'm seeing some nice pieces. I found a nice reclining sofa in their Latitudes leather for $2149 including tax and delivery. I need to go take a look at it this weekend, its a 45 minute drive. Here's the one I'm looking at.

Well fuck now I'm reading some bad shit about Flexsteel. And according to a couple posts I read the Latitudes line including the sofa above are made in China, fuck that.

I wouldn't trust Macy's furniture at all. We got a stuffed chair and sofa-sleeper from them. Both fell apart within 4 years. Utter garbage.

On the other hand, we bought the Pottery Barn Pearce sectional and have enjoyed it quite a bit. Made in the USA.

I just bought some couches at american freight. Sofa and loveseat for $500. They were almost the only size that would fit in my small living room. The lady told me it was bonded leather. I didn't know what it was but it sounded alright.

Turns out its basically vinyl mixed with a little ground up leather scraps. Not that comfortable to sit on. I feel like I'm sitting on a rain coat or something. But for the money its fine, if it lasts for a few years.

I purchased a Natuzzi leather sofa and loveseat from Kaufmanns (now Macys) about 25 years ago. It's still going strong even with owning dogs the whole time who like to sleep on it. I paid something like $2k - $2.5k for both if I recall correctly.

when i was looking for power recliners for my home theater i stopped in la-z-boy store and was very unimpressed with the stuff they had in there, especially for the cost of the stuff. the staff was not very helpful at all either. it overall just seemed like a very overpriced store.

we bought our sectional for our main family room area from haverty's and have been more than happy with it. it was around $2200 i believe.

My in-laws have a Natuzzi sofa and loveseat that is about 6 years old. It has these oversized tacks about the size of quarters, a shit ton of them are falling out and are hard to get to stay. The springs in the most used spots are also showing wear already. The leather itself and the upholstery look very good. I think their combo was only like $1800 though. Perhaps that's the problem, you paid more than them 25 years ago.

Its kind of a viscous cycle, for some reason over the years people have come to expect to spend less, in turn the quality has suffered. Now even people willing to pay for good pieces are getting skeptical since even some of the once good brands like la-z-boy are going south. Now the attitude is kind of what is the least I can spend and have it last a few years. Spend too little and it will only last 1-2 years but spend too much and risk getting burned by a $3000 couch that has to be replaced after 5 years.
