Which Socket 478 board is the best Asus has made?

After 2-years of near-flawless operation, 2-weeks ago, a cyber-female voice from my Asus P4C800-Deluxe started reporting System Failed CPU Test everytime I attempt to boot my PC. I couldn't tell if my system was even getting to the BIOS reporting stage as my monitor was not getting any video signal.

The first thing I did was to clear the BIOS and see if reverting to the default conditions would help, but it didn't. So taking the MB's posting message at face-value, I phoned Intel and subsequently RMA'd my CPU. Last week I received the replacement CPU and installed it in my MB. To my utter disgust, I still got the same message after installing the new CPU! So I figured the PSU might not be providing the right voltages, so I replaced it with a know good 460W PSU, but the problem persisted.

I just called Asus and the rep told me they are aware that some of their older boards ultimately don't withstand the stress placed on them by the Intel heatsink-fan retention mechanism. While they gave me an RMA number (the board is still under warranty), they informed me that they do not have any more P4C800 Deluxe boards in stock so they are willing to replace mine with any later model Asus socket 478 board of my choosing.

Which Asus 478 board should I request for my Northwood P4C 2.8GHz (800MHz - HT)? ....fwiw, I don't overclock and I don't need Raid. Thanks for any help!

If price is of no concern go for the P4C800E Deluxe as it is based on the superor 875 (Canterwood) chipset, whereas the P4P800E Deluxe is based on the less capable 865PE chipset.

Good luck,

Maybe get the Asus P4RD1-MX, It has a PCIe slot. Something about an ATI 200 chipset. anyways...I'm looking for this board . If you decided to get it (or find it for sale soomewhere) please post back here.

Hope I helped.

The p4p800-e deluxe is also a good board as its cheaper and u can enable PAT, which as far as i know the diff between the 875 and the 865PE chipset. Make sure ur ram is also matched as for my old p4p800 using unmatched ram (2 different 512 stick (timings etc)) still worked in dual chanel but it would crash if i enabled PAT.

Edit
The p4c800 e deluxe would be a better choice, although the next best would be the p4p800 e deluxe.

IntelConvert~ I wished you good luck because the very same problem has been flooding various forums for quite some time. Asus' P4C800 and P4P800 boards (in all of their variations) suffer from this defect. Rather then fix the problem, Asus justs replaces those failed boards under warranty with another one that's destined to fail. Those boards are now in the phase-out stage and Asus probably figures the problem will go away when they no longer have any 478 boards left to replace returned dead boards!

Since you're not an overclocker, you may ultimately want to consider Intel MBs which are well designed and constructed.

Again, good luck to you!
