I'd say PES handsdown but... they're going through EA syndrome by getting lax and not doing enough; having said that, I'll have to go with PES. UEFA is better than FIFA, but both are bad.

I only played the demo of PES 08 on the 360 and didn't come away impressed. FIFA 08 offers a lot of nice gameplay, along with great atmosphere and realism, something that PES 08 can't offer, sadly.

I thought EA makes UEFA Euro 08, which would make it pretty much the same as FIFA 08 with some advancements, or perhaps a glance at some stuff that will make it into FIFA 09.

I have been a big fan of the PES games in the past, all the way back to when it was International SuperStar soccer on the N64. I liked it more than the FIFA games largely due to its faster gameplay and better scoring ability. (Scoring in many of the past FIFA games was impossible. Goalkeepers could jump all the way across the goal in the blink of an eye). However FIFA 2008 has now taken the crown for me because it has greatly improved its gameplay. Stealing the ball is more intuitive and gameplay is very realistic. Goalies make realistic saves, but will often fail to save a ball hit at an angle if the kick was too powerful. This is the first soccer game where I have actually been able to score on crossed balls using a header. Not to mention it also has most of the international teams, players, and many of the stadiums.

People who have voted Fifa are idiots. Anyone who plays and cares about football (or soccer as you Americans call it) knows PES is the best. Most stores in Europe have PES in top sellers shelf and Fifa games in clearance bins.

The current iterations are right in line with the PES franchise in gameplay and unfortunately far outpace PES in presentation, an important aspect of immersion for sports games.

For the rest out there, I just picked up Euro 2008 and have to say the Captain Your Country mode is great, especially with a friend. After some time with Euro 2008, I officially can't wait for FIFA 09.

If Konami actually put some effort into making PES 09 better than 08--which was a rehashed 07--I'll definitely take a look at it as well.

I really like Fifa's commentators, it adds to the realism. Does PES have commentators?

PES on the Wii is so weird, even the interface is completely revamped, I do like the precision the pointer controls give you, it's pretty fun once you get used to it but not a replacement for a regular controller in my opinion. Konami did a great job with the Wii version though/

I don't know, I didn't play Fifa 2008 much, spent around 15 minutes at most on it at a retail store but what I saw did not impress me. I know visual effects and licenses is what Fifa 2008 has an advantage in but effects don't impress me much, reality of gameplay and football feeling do and those are two things PES is still better than Fifa.

You can also mod PES to have all the licensed teams&players you want. There're like a billion patches online.
