Which small sport-ute for daddy's 19 year-old princess?

UNCjigga

Lifer
Seems myself and daddy are pitching in to get my sister a brand-new sport-ute (small SUV?) in time for her birthday on July 15. I know nothing about this segment, but I know that our budget is up to $21,000 (preferrably under $20k if possible.)

Keep in mind we're looking for fuel economy and safety, not power or towing. Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4, Saturn Vue are the only options I know of. What else would you guys recommend?

edit: someone recommended Ford Escape...I heard these things suck for safety though (lots of safety-related recalls?) When will the hybrid be out (prolly can't afford it?)

edit: Subaru Forrester sounds good.

Can't go wrong with a CR-V. Cute, AWD, well-built and reliable for years to come. Only problem is that discounts and good deals are few and far between on them.

BTW, why are YOU chipping in? Do you really want to help pay for your sister's 850-R replacement? That's a sweet car she's giving up, by the way.

Yeah, that Volvo 850R is a piece of sh!t. Before paying someone to tow that garbage off your driveway, I guess I could be bothered to take it off your hands. Ship it to Black88GTA in East Lansing, MI plz. 😀

It has 150,000 miles and it probably needs an engine rebuild...electrical sh*t randomly stops working, and its become one of those cars that's always in the shop. She's taking it up to Chapel Hill for summer school and I guess my dad wants piece of mind that she has a reliable car.

The 850R used to be mine...bought it second-hand and it already had 80,000 miles on it...previous owner would drive between Charlotte-Atlanta weekly.

Get her what I had at 19 (in 1994) a 1978 Ford LTD. Rides good seats alot of people. . .

She want's a SUV, get her an 80's bronco II. She needs to learn the value of having a car and responsibility.
It makes me mad that people will just up and by their kids a $20k+ car. when my kid grows up and she wants daddy to get her a car she'll get a beater.

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with a kid having a new car (as long as it's not a Merc or a Bimmer or something equally over the top). I got a new (2000) Nissan Sentra when I started driving (ended up selling it to my sister when I went to college for a chunk of cash and her 1996 Sentra), and I just took delivery two weeks ago of a 2004 Honda Accord LX 5-speed. I had a job for all four years of HS and paid my dad for 2/3 of the Sentra payment each month.

As for the Accord, I'm taking care of all the payments myself and the car is registered to me. I don't think there's anything wrong with a nice car as long as the person driving it realizes the responsbility and the costs of owning a new car.

However, what Jigga's dad is doing is wrong, IMHO. At least make her pay for SOME of the car, even if it is a Bday present!

I guess there really is no such thing as free rent 🙁

Its just a small part of the price to pay for living at home 🙁

WTF

I'd never consider chipping in on a sibling's car to be part of the cost.

850's have finicky electrical systems.

Go to this site and then click on "Vehicle Ratings" to look up the vehicle in question to see how they fared in crash tests.

The IIHS has higher standards than the Government Crash testing does.

Wrong. Volvo's have finicky electrical systems. In fact, pretty much every thing about the car other than the powertrain is over engineered crap that breaks. BTW, I've owned several Volvos, and will own more in the future. I heart Volvo.

Still, 150k miles is nothing for a Volvo.

What about a Jeep Liberty?
