Which should I join. Army of Air Force?

Ok i am having a problem deciding what I want to do in the future. I have narrowed it down to going out to become a Ranger in the Army or doing something computer wise in the Air Force. These are 2 completely different careers and there is a good reason for that. See I am not very sure if I want to spend four years working on computer stuff and well I could stand four years of doing physical things which is why I think think this is a good thing. I am equally split on which one i want to do. Does anyone know if there are any benefits that one has over the other like do i get paid more being one or the other? Im having a really hard time deciding and right now I do not want to go to college right now so dont even mention that as an option for me. I have about a month or 2 to decide which one I should go to. Right now i'm a senior in highschool. I am very confident that I can withstand training to become a ranger and am willing to put the time in during this spring and summer to succeed.

Any opinions or help would be appreciated especially from people serving right now.

Go with the Air Force, it's easier :p

Both or my parents are in it (Mom has over 22 years) and they love it :p

none.I do not recommend anyone to join the arm forces. Once u are in , they pretty much can call u back anytime and it don't matter if u left after serviing their for 2 or 4 years.

My dad, who served in the US Army for 22 years, always told me to go into the Air Force...because they treat their pilots first-class...and it's easier.

From your post, I suggest looking into being a Combat Controller, or Pararescue in the Air Force. You get the physicalness that you're seeking, and the prestige of being an airman:D

Haha :D

If it was my decision, I'd join the Air Force just because of all the computer training you would receive, jusdt my opinion, hope it helps :)

What the heck??!!

Rangers are Army guys; at least my Army buddy who is attending Ranger school seems to be under that impression. Green Berets are Army as well, but they are kinda like the cream of the crop. Usually, they may not be as physically fit nor as young as Rangers, but the Green Berets are usually all college educated, speak multiple languages and are more cerebal than other special ops units.

Air Force does have a higher standard of living, so that may be a factor. Pay scale may not really matter, everybody uses the GS pay scale. I would imagine being a Ranger would put you into more dire circumstances and I believe if you are indeed in a combat zone you get paid more and/or it is tax free up to a certain point.

I would talk to a couple of recruiters and see what they can do for you. Just because you join the Army, that does not guarantee a spot for Ranger school; however if join the Air Force you would never have a chance, but they have their own Special Ops units.

You could always talk about Air Force enlistment, then go to school, snag a 4-year degree and go back into the Air Force as a pilot and officer; pilots are required to be college educated, in most instances.

My army buddy did that, served 5 years enlisted went to school paid for by the government, got out went to whatever the Army calls OCS and gets paid rather decent (apparantly all about prior service).

Anyhow, with whatever decision you chose to make, sounds like you are on the right path so far.

I think the cool thing abou the military is that you get cold hard cash for going on a TDY/remote. My step-father recently went to Saudi Arabia for 3 months, and he recieved $27,000 tax free just for going. He just left for his second time two weeks ago.

Boot camp in the Air Force is based on Army boot camp. At least it was. Boot camp isn't easy for anyone. It isn't meant to be. Boot camp takes the you out of the picture to make you a team player, and preapares you to obey orders to the very end. Your life and fellow soldiers life depends on it.

After boot camp comes the real training, which depends on what you are being trained for that determines where and for how long before you get your 1st real duty assignment. This period of training, both boot and formal training comes with marching, lots of it. After you get into your 1st duty assignment, that falls away pretty much accept for ceremonies, which are few and far between.

Air Force food is best of all the branches and best if you are pilot or aircraft assigned. Midnight chow is best in the world, steak and eggs to die for. Much of an Air Force career is just like a 9-5 job, accept its 7:30 to 4:30. Of course there are shifts. But none the less, its pretty much like a civilian job for time on duty. The timer off duty is yours,to persue what you like. Just don't be late for work when your supposed to be on duty, and don't show up drunk.

There is nothing wrong with being a Marine or a Soldier or a Sailor. Being an Airman does have its perks. And it is not easy to get in. Air Force is very very picky. Many try anddon't get in.

They become Sailors and Marines.;)

Just remember if you are in the Air Force you gotta live with others giving you heck for being in the 'Chair Force.'

But, my Air Foce buddy gets annoyed with all the Army guys walking around saying 'Hooah!!' to each other over every little thing.

Oh, also for kicks, my other buddy who is Air Force but stationed on an Army ran base up in Monterey California said he had better food while in basic for the Air Force then being out of basic but being on an Army base.

AFAIK, Air Force isn't hiring Network Admin officers. I applied for it and was told that they're not accepting ANYONE. FYI, I got GREAT scores and in perfect health.

I was in the Army but I was loaned out to the Air Force most of the time and I can tell you that in the inlisted ranks the Air Force treats you better, you get some respect and the training is 2nd to none. My choice would be the Air Force.

If you want a physical challenge / environment then go for the Army. My brother is a Captain and just got done with a mission in the Philipenes. He says that his job is very physically demanding even for an officer, but still has its benefits (prestige, money, etc).

If you want a job that has a better chance of translating to the civilian world when your done, then the Air Force would be a good choice. Plus in both branches there are opportunities to get your degree, become an officer, etc etc..

I guess it comes down to where you want to be an outdoors person or an indoors. Not a perfect analogy but its mostly right.

Based on my prior enlistment with the Air Force, I'd recommend enlisting with them. As the others have indicated, you'll be treated much better within the A.F. Plus, their food isn't half bad, either. I have many opportunities to eat Army food in their chow halls and it wasn't nearly as good. Then again, if you're going into the Army to be a Ranger, plan on eating plenty of M.R.E. meals - and forget about warm meals at the chow hall.

Good luck with your decision!

I think someone in the air force would have better knowledge in more things in the civilian world than a groundpounder. No offense to the rangers or anything, but computer related skills in the air farce will get you more jobs compared to "can field strip an m-16 in 30 seconds blindfolded upside down." Unless you plan on becoming a mercenary or something.
