Which should be Master/Slave: CD-RW or DVD?

If I have a burner and DVD-ROM on the same channel, which combo gives the best performance? Should the burner be master and the DVD-ROM be slave, or the other way around?

<< Why? >>

In general, they require control of the ATA channel and more direct access to the CPU. It's just one of those axioms in setting up computers.

I put my CDrw master over my dvd because the only time I use my dvd is when playing movies which runs fine as slave. The CDRW is my primary CD rom and burner which I use more often.

But does putting a device in the master position actually have that effect? If you're not using the DVD and CD-RW simultaneously, does it matter which goes where?

Makes a big difference if you ever want to copy a CD on the fly. The best solution is to have them on separate controllers.

I have been burning CDRs since 1995 . . . my first burner was a Pinnacle Micro 2X. I learned way back that external SCSI was the best way to go for a burner. That is still good, but choices are few. The "replacement" for that is now external Firewire or USB 2.0.

<< I have my burners as master on both of my computers...

Then again both of my burners are in the top drive bays on my computer...

lol phsyical bay position has nothing to do with it (I assume u knew this)

When you install your CDRW drive, it says specifically that it must be on the Master setting. If not, my 24x was only able to burn at 8x.
That was phooey
