I have two shakers, one with two small holes and one with three large holes. It seems logical to me that the salt goes in the one with the two small holes. Correct?

I think it is the other way around even though logically you are correct.

edit: buy ones with a "S" and "P" next time. :D

yes, salt falls out of holes easier than pepper

more holes are needed for a similar dose of pepper

Flavor Camp: Salt goes in the shaker with more holes because people use salt more often, and in greater amounts. This equalizes the need, making one shake roughly the same for either spice.

Flow Camp: Pepper goes in the shaker with more holes because it consists of larger chunks than salt. This equalizes the flow, making one shake roughly the same for either spice.

i vote with the logic of the flow camp

Salt isn't a spice.

That aside, I align with the Flavor Camp. Down with Flow Campers! :p

Pepper is bigger than salt, and doesn't flow as well. If you put salt in the pepper shaker, too much will come out. Pepper can come in particle sizes even bigger than the standard-- so even more reason why the bigger holes are for pepper. Why would it have anything to do with how often you use them??

The goal is to require the same number of shakes from each one to properly season whatever dish it is. If you want to achieve this, you want to put the salt in the shaker that dispenses more with each shake since people usually use more salt than pepper.

IMO I would rather taste it after adding a little each time. This is the only way to get it how you really want it.

You could also have a hybrid shaker w/ salt and pepper mixed. Two settings! high salt/ low pepper and low salt/high pepper! (one for each shaker)

Which ever one you want...

This is as bad as the question about which way toilet paper should hang on the holder...down the front, or down the back...

YOU decide...(unless it says S & P, then you are required by Federal law to put them in the proper containers...) ;)
