I have windows 98, and instead of purchasing win98 SE i was told that i could achieve the same effect by downloading the service packs - now i went to the windows update site, but i have a few questions:

1) how many service packs are there?
2) which ones should i download to achieve win98SE status
3) after doing so, will there be any difference *at all* between my OS and win98SE?

thanks

After you download all the bug and security fixes, your system should be very similar to Win98SE except you will not have the Internet Connection Sharing stuff.
That's what I remembered about Win98SE when it first came out.

Win98 has only 1 "customer service pack" which incorporates security fixes, Y2K updates and a system update.

To achieve near Win98SE status, you will need not only the service pack, but also DirectX 6.1 (Win98 shipped with DirectX 5), IE 5 (Win98 shipped with IE 4). Drivers for various items are downloaded separately (Win98SE has a larger and more updated driver library than Win98FE).

Updated USB support is questionable as to whether or not it can be downloaded.

The only thing that you cannot download is the ICS: Internet Connection Sharing.
