I want to put together a nice little backup drive. I'm currently looking at the 200, 250, and 300gb pata models. The price is pretty close on all of them. My main criteria is mostly low noise. The quieter, the better. Anyone have experience and care to comment?

Any of them would be good. Most segate drives are relativly quiet, and they dont run really hot either. Just make sure that you get a good enclosure that is designed well, and remember that the bigger the drive, the hotter it may run (eg. More platters). That should put you off getting the bigger one though. Just get the size that your happy with.

If you want something that is nice and quiet, you could try a 200gb or a 250gb Samsung P120. They are the coolest running drives in their class, which would also be a bonus for you.

I dunno. I love Seagate, but I've only had up to 80gb drives from them. I've tried Western Digital and Maxtor and a couple other oddbals, but Seagate is my favorite.

Just a thought, I also use external USB enclosure.
Surprisingly, I found Samsung P series quieter than Seagate.
