Which screws go where when installing mobo?

n00b here.

So which screws go where? The brass ones with the hole in the head go in the back between the tray and mobo huh? If so, does it need a spacer between it and the mobo? Or is it not conductive therefore not needing a spacer?

Then I should use the smallest screws in front on the mobo? They should have a spacer too eh? I have metal lookin spacers and red paper lookin spacers....I should go for the paper ones shouldnt I? Or metal on top of paper spacer?

And do I have to put a screw in EVERY hole on the mobo?

My case came with lil red paper-feelin spacers, silver metal screw w/silver metal spacer kinda hangin to it,lil metal silver screws, metal silver screws wit bigger head than previously mentioned one but has grip under it,and then the brass-lookin one with long head that has a hole in it for another screw.

I use 2 brass screws to mount the mobo to the tray/case.

Never use spacers....while "shorting" is bad, you still want the board to be grounded.

I screwed all the copper standoffs to the case, put the motherboard on them, and then used regular case screws to screw the motherboard to the standoffs. Make sure you atleast put all the standoffs in so your board isn't flexing all over the place when installing stuff.

you can use the red washers between the MB and standoffs, and under the heads of the screws too if you like. some MB'S run the traces pretty close to the holes. some of the screw heads are rather large too.
the MB is connected to ground thru the power connector. it doen't need to be in direct contact with the stand-offs. i usually use the nylon stand-offs on the whole thing.
good luck

Sukhoi, that's a good tip as I only used to put in the screws that my M/B needed, thanks 🙂

You can use the red "spacers" on the standoffs (brass ones). Use them between the standoffs and the MB and even between the MB and the screws, if you have enough. Boards now do not need "grounding" as that is done through the power supply. The red spacers (actually called washers) can and IMHO should be used. MB manufacturers are squeezing more and more onto the boards so the traces can get very close to the screw/standoff areas. The red washer prevents the screws or standoffs from shorting the board. If your board does need "grounding" you can be sure it would be mentioned in the manual but it is just not a worry on anything remotely current. Use the screws that look like they have a "built in" washer on them but not the "squared off" six sided ones. There should be plenty of them included.

Oops, I should clarify myself a little. I meant at least put in the standoffs for the screw holes that your motherboard has, even if you aren't going to screw all of them in. You don't literally want to put a copper standoff in every hole in the case or they're going to be scratching the traces on your motherboard and possibly shorting it out. 🙂

I usually use 6 screws (and standoffs)... 3 by the expansion slots(left edge/vertically) and 3 down the right edge.

I never use (or had a problem without) the spacers.

i use four screws (one at each corner..or as close as i can get) and a standoff for every hole on the board

gives it enough support and its plenty secure, at least for me🙂
