I want to buy a scanner for home useage for picture libraries and general work.

I've looked at the Umax Astra 3400 and it looks good. Any others within the same price class that might be a better choice ?

I've read the PCWORLD reviews and they list the 3400 as a good choice.

My GF has the cheaper 2000p and I was very pleased with the results. Unless your into very high end imaging most scanners do a reasonable job. Office Depot has a deal for a low end HP (can't remember the model) for about $40.

yeah I have an HP scanjet 3200c I bought for 99.00 about 9 months ago it works very good, and surely has to be cheaper by now.

I'm not sure the the AGFA SnapScan 1212U is under $100 ($120 for sure), but it has great quality. I have one, and you can either get USB connection or parallel connection. USB is 1212U, and parallel is 1212P.

UMAX has no Win2000 drivers. None. Until they do, I recommend against buying their scanners. Win2K is where it's at, man

The Umax does have win2k support but they just never released the updates on the us site. Go to the UK site to find all the updates you need to for win2k.
