Which runs hotter, AMD X2 or Intel Core Duo?

Howdy friends.

I'm sort of undecided if I should buy AMD X2 5600+ or Intel E6550. The benches give Intel a bit of a advantage, but I would be more interested which runs hotter. After some googling I came to the conclusion that there is absolutely no mention of cpu temps since Athlon 64, and it's something that I care about a lot.

So I was hoping that maybe someone here might have an idea. I don't plan to overclock this machine at all, so just idle and load temps on stock timings would be awesome. Or even a general idea of the current generation temps.

Thanks. :)

The thing is that I'm a bit worried if my current case cooling is sufficient. Right now I'm running my Athlon 64 3800+ with boxed cooler and two 120mm case fans (one in the front and one in the back) and my idle temp is cpu 49C and mobo 39C. Of what I have read it seems that atleast Intel supposedly runs at lower temps on idle, so is it just a generation gap between the A64 and the next gen that I'm seeing, am I worrying over nothing?

I can say that my E6600 usually idles around 41C, using stock intel cooling and no over clocking. My old X2 4200 idled about 5 degrees higher than that and peaked at a higher temp, again using stock cooling and no OCing.

Since someone will always bring it up, the ambient temp here is too warm for much OCing and I'm too cheap to run the AC all day. :p

The way temps are measured with AMD's CPUs is not the same as Intel's Core 2 lineup, so you can't really get a very realistic number unless you find a review with someone measuring manually, & not relying on software.

At stock though, C2D would be cooler usually.
Not enough to make much of a different though.

Alrighty. Thanks everyone. :)

Now all I need is to find the right mobo for my tastes.

people here are failing to mention AMD's cool n Quite. With Cool and quite enabled, AMD will be twice as cool and uses 1/2 as much power as Intel's counterpart.
The truth will be in the screenshots @ any intel and amd forum. check this website below and start looking for screenshots taken by individual members of both camps. Then you will clearly se AMD runs much cooler. Something Intel fanboys here wont tell you and hide from you.
Be careful.

I think here's what you're looking for: http://users.erols.com/chare/elec.htm

Athlon 64 X2 5600+: 89W 70°C
Core 2 Duo E6550: 65W 60°C
Athlon 64-3800+ (Venice): 89W 65°C

So you can expect the 5600+ to have the same temperature as a 3800+ Venice so in case you are already reaching 65° with the Venice you would have a problem. The C2D will run at a cooler temperature but has a lower max temperature as well.

A very rough calculation I just did shows that if you are running the Venice at the limit in terms of temperature then both of the othe r CPU's will run 5° below max.

AMD Athlon X2 BE-2350, with a TDP of 45, runs at 2.1ghz, should be pretty cool n quiet ;)

Buy the faster processor - E6550 - and Cooler Master TX or Arctic Cooling 7 Pro and you are set. Also, it's somewhat unfair to compare A64 and C2D as has been mentioned above and especially for the fact that X2 has an onboard memory controller which on an intel motherboard will be additional 15W (northbridge).

If you want total quietness, go with a thermalright 120 ultra extreme, and don't put a fan in it ^^

I have a 5600+ and according to coretemp it runs in the mid 40s load with a zalmann cnps9500 in a antec 900 with the cpu and case fans always running at 100% which I would consider running fairly high for my cooling seeing as a 3.7 x6800 produces only about 10C more, with no case fans, than my cpu which is oc'd to 3.15ghz and is probably the equavalent to my cpu clocked in the 4+ghz range.

If you want an x2 go cheap or go to the BE series because if temps are a major issue for you than the high end windsor chips will not be a good choice. A cheap Brisbane would be a good choice because they run much cooler than other chips and run in the low to mid 2ghz range.

I'm on a bit of a budget right now, so I probably won't get any extra cooling right away, the stock cooler will have to do (and should be enough for me anyway). Just a little more research on this before I order anything and I'm all set.

Thanks again. :D

I would be more interested which runs hotter

It depends on how you run your system...
For peak temps (when you are under heavy load), the C2D will run cooler...for average temps (when you are under medium and lower load) the X2 runs cooler.

I daresay that it's the peak temps you're interested in...

Depends on the model, the low power AMDs run very cool, while some of the upper end chips just got new lower power ratings so they should run cooler as well.

I do NOT have any Intel chips so I can not comment on them.

I can tell you that the Brisbane X2 chips run cool, cooler than my 3800 X2 939 CPU for sure, lower voltage. I'm runnning a Brisbane 3600 X2 undervolted at about 1.12V actual, 1.15V in the BIOS, and it is also overclocked to 2.0Ghz. It idles at 27-28C on a Biostar TA690G board using a factory 939 heatsink with AS5 applied, inside a Microfly case. The case has stock 80mm (?) and 120mm fasn.

The Brisbane actually runs all the way down to 0.90V. I just thought I'd bump it a little since it still runs so cool anyway, plus I wanted a massive overclock from 1.9 to 2Ghz. Doh!!

I didnt know the brisbane would run that low, in either case id say youre safe putting them in a low airflow case if undervolted. Both cases here would be well under 20w at load.

Hell even my B3 Q6600 goes down to 1.1v, id imagine a G0 can duck even lower.
