Company of Heroes for the best - few things cluttering up the screen, lots of well-made drop-down or slide-out menus, units move well and easily (except for lots of tanks).

Edit: And yeah, Starcraft had a terrible interface/grouping stuff.

SC. nothign comes close.

lol...12 unit selection max, horrible group management, no queing orders. what the fuck are you talking about?

Requires much hard work and micro skill.
Being able to select 1 million units or queuing orders shows little skill. My 6 year old cousin can do that.

Being able to select different units rather than a million units at once and remembering to do orders rather than have computers do it for you queuing orders with 1 click.

TA Kingdoms is the best. It had everything of TA's only-ultra refined and a couple extra tricks.
I think the best function was the ability to select units and issue commands in the mega-map.

Worst is probably some old DOS or Win95 game that no one even remembers.

Wow, you think Warcraft 3 had too much macro management instead of micro? Do you also think Rainbow 6 was too much like an action game and not enough simulation? Or Monopoly too much of a buisness simulator instead of a board game?

W3 was the epitome of micro managing RTS's (which is why I didn't like it).

Another vote for Supreme Commander. Biggest improvement in a single game though, would have to go to Total Annihilation ...

As far as I'm concerned, the history of RTS games goes like this: Dune 2 -> Warcraft -> Command and Conquer -> Warcraft 2 -> Red Alert -> Total Annihilation -> TA Core Contingency -> Spring -> Supreme Commander.

supreme commander. i can't play any other RTS without the strategic zoom now. its just too effing frustrating.

also its queuing system is the best i've seen by far.

so:

-strategic zoom
-awesome queuing
-no unit selection limits
-easy camera control (if you need it...i rarely use it)

SupCom is excellent, as is Dawn of War, Warcraft 3 for simplicity and I actually think C&C3 has pretty damn nice UI.
Homeworld gets an honourable mention for being so ballsy with the full 3D thing. Took a while to get used to but man did it achieve great effect.
