Which Router....Linksys or SMC?

Hello everyone. I'm officially supposed to get a cable modem hooked up on December 6th. I had originally considered having a server....but I'm leaning towards getting a router instead. I have seen two routers that seem to be pretty nice and I would like some opinions as to what some of you think. I'm very interested in your opinions and thoughts. Thanks in advance!

SMC Router

Linksys Router

There are no significant differences between most of the Entry level Cable/DSL Routers.

Conventional Wisdom claims: The Routing Trinity.

1. Netgear RT314
2. Barricade 7004ABR
3. Linksys BEFSR41

Some Routers have an additional Printer Server, and DialUp Modem input for backup.

I would choose the one that has the features that fit the way you use the
Internet (and may be it is on sale).

Table comparing these Routers.

I have a Netgear RT314, and I love it. After the initial configuration, it's run without any trouble since the beginning of July. 🙂

I have used and set up several brands. Go with the SMC Barricade 7004ABR. You get a print server and reliability. Had a problem with one SMC I set up for a client. Tech support was awesome, helped me update the firmware ... bingo, ready to roll in 15 minutes. Go with SMC!

I have the SMC Barricade router, and very happy with it...

I guess there's not much difference between the 3 routers, but with SMC you do get the Print Server which is nice...

If u have a laptop consider wireless router SMC 7004AWBR , I have it , I love it. Freedom of roaming in the house without wires is so good😉

Linksys seems to have a freindlier interface than does the SMC - however the SMC does offer the print server option. As for possibly having a server on your network - i found it simpler to use the linksys for "port forwarding" since SMC has changed their interface a couple times and don't seem to update their manuals. I was helping a newbie try to set his up (over the phone with him sending screen shots) even with the latest firmware upgrade their online pdf manual still didn't match. Horse a piece. both offer similar things.

SMC. It's nice being able to turn on my computer from work, so when I get home my comp is already on.

Are there any significant problems with the Linksys? I was thinking about picking one up for $70 at Best Buy at that before noon sale tomorrow. Is the Linksys secure? Can I turn cetain ports off? tia

well this is going to sound stupid but what is this printer server thing as my self am looking as getting a router for sharning my cable modem

Any of you using netgear 314 doing any netmeeting through it? I would like to know how you configured it if you can netmeet and use the video cam and microphone through the router.

I have a netgear RO318 I want to set up to do net meeting and replace my linux server with its firewall, just so I can do thisnetmeetting stuff. It is important I do it right. I have a bed ridden relative that I want to set up vidcam so his children can see and visit with him through the net from across the web.
