Which router for dynamic IP?

I was just reading a review of the Linksys BEFSR41 at speedguide. They liked the router but said "DON'T Buy it if you have a dynamic IP. you will have NO CONTROL over your DHCP IP. There is no option on the Router's interface for either renewing or releasing your dynamic IP."

I've never seen anything about this mentioned before. How do I find a router that handles dynamic IP?

If you're not going to be hosting a web page, file server, ect. then it won't be a problem at all. Even if you are, there are services like DNS2Go that will give you a web address and then update it to your IP.

You read a Review that was written at Dec. 2000.

Some of the Cons in this review are similar to saying ?The problem with this car is that it has no wings?. Most of the Cons listed there do not exist in all Entry level Routers.

There are no significant differences between most of the Entry level Cable/DSL Routers.

Conventional Wisdom claims: The Routing Trinity.

1. Netgear RT314
2. Barricade 7004ABR
3. Linksys BEFSR41

(The above are 4 ports, they have also 8 ports version, and same reviews apply).

Some Routers have an additional Printer Server, and DialUp Modem input for backup.

As long as you use the Router for regular Internet surfing, and files downloading it really does not matter which Router you buy.

What emerges, as a different between Cable/DSL Routers is Ports opening?

If you do extensive use, of online Gaming or you are running a server, or you use on line services like iRC etc. You need to open additional ports through the Router's Hardware Firewall. You want to make sure that the Router that you buy has the flexibility to do port opening in the way you like it.

List of typical ports use by variety of applications can be found here.

Special Applications - Port List.

I would choose the one that has the features that fit the way you use the Internet (and may be it is on sale).

Table comparing these Routers.

Thanks guys. I won't be running a server, so that's good to know.

Jack, Thanks for the links. I'll check them out. I see that the summary for the Linksys says that it has ongoing firmware problems. But the last update is a year old.

This issue has been changed by the new firmware. That complaint does not apply at all anymore. You can now view your lease info and renew from the router setup page.
