I'm going to load my OS onto a hard drive, and I've got other 320s for data storage... but which raptor should I get? I heard the 74 beats the 36 for performance, but what about the 150?

Edit: Also, I see people talking about great performance when they use a RAID config with the 74 drive. Specifically, the WD740ADFD -- I don't know much about RAID, period. I'm too data loss conscious to go with a RAID 0, but what does a RAID 1+0 entail and would it produce comparable speeds that the RAID 0 seems to get?
 
Within the raptor series, the 74gig drive is the best deal. I don't think the extra $110 bucks is worth the upgrade to 150gigs.
 
You dont need RAID at all - performance difference would be insignificant so it wouldnt be worth the money. That 74GB Raptor is best deal for you.
 
Th reason why the 74gb is better than the 36gb is the platter is twice as dense on the 74gb, if you use the outer edge for your OS, all your files are on a much denser portion hence the read arm needs to move a shorter distance.

raid 0+1, is a 4 drive system, classically anyway.

what you do is get 4 drives, all identical in size. you get raid 0 by striping 2 drives as such, and the other 2 drives act as a raid 1 (mirrored) array for the raid 0 array. the downside is that you have 1/2 the total storage available. for instance if you use the 74gig raps you get 74+74 = 148g TOTAL drive size, the other 2 drives just mirror the first ones.

I've read that wikipedia entry before but it doesn't have any real numbers on speed. Is there any RAID solution to ensure data safety and still get increased performance out of two 74 raptors? I recall that RAID 1 doesn't offer an increase in performance.
 
74 GB run it myself also I like to install my top 5 games on it also so they are quick you can get an OS set of 20 apps and 5 games and still space letf over for swap file etc.

No there isn't. If you had three or more than you could use RAID5 or one of the other RAID functions, but not with 2 drives.

RAID is a bit of a waste of time, what do you think it's going to do?

Either way head over to www.storagereview.com and have a look through that place. The forum has a lot of info on RAID and why it's a waste of time for most people.

The raptor 150 is faster than the 74, which is faster than the 36. If you want more speed than a 74 then get a 150.
 
I fell for the raid 0 trap back when the original raptors 36gb came out. After finding out that the real performance was 0 difference, I pulled one of the 36gb raptors & sold it to a friend. At least I got some of my money back.

For your situation 1x 150gb would be what I recommend, simply for having the extra storage space.
 
The newer 74GB / 16MB cache Raptors are the same thing except 1/2 the storage space and much less $$. If you are using the Raptor as an OS drive, no need for all the excess storage on the 150GB version.

Which is true, but the old rule of bigger = faster still holds true.
