Which RAM would be better for this?

I have a 512MB/320MHz RAM stick and I'm plannig on getting another one; if 400MHz, would they be working at 320MHz both? even on different RAM slots?(I'll put the 400MHz one on the first slot). And finally if the answer is that they will work at 320, would there be a difference if I get a 320MHz stick or 400Mhz one?

Thanks in advance.

WTF is 320Mhz RAM? Standard speeds for DDR are 200, 266, 333, and 400. If you mix DDR333 and DDR400, you'll have to run both at DDR333 speeds.

Welcome to the forums, BTW. And search next time; people ask about mixing RAM all the time. 😛

I just got the speed from the Intel Desktop Control Center, don't blame me XD. And sorry.

Also another question, would I have problems if the 2nd stick isn't the same brand as the first one? Like conflicts? I'm planning on getting a Kingston.

On an Intel socket 478 board, if you put in PC2700 RAM, it'll run at 320, not 333 so that's what he's refering to. It's the 5:4 ratio. 4x200/5 = 160 = DDR320.

i think searching would be your best option 😛

i believe your answer is no, but it may. i'd search just in case and for a better understanding.

Ah, interesting.
So many OEMs do that...throwing in dividers here & there to make things confusing.

An Intel 865Pearl with 800FSB using a P4 3.0GHz CPU. Well, thanks for the answers; as no one mentioned it, I guess there would be no conflicts with different RAM stick brands or am I wrong?

With an 800mhz FSB chip, you are losing at least 15% performance by not running dual channel, and plus you are running the ram at below the FSB speed, so you are taking another performance hit. Ideally, you should sell the stick you have, and get 2x512mb sticks of PC3200 so you can run dual channel and 1:1. At the very least, get another stick of what you already have so you can run dual channel. It may be possible for dual channel to work with 2 sticks from differant Mfgs, but not as likely, and you are taking a huge performance hit already.

You just answered my next question, I think I'll sell the one I have and find to a friend that wants to buy one; if I don't I think I'll need to find somewhere to sell it(I hope my timing is good, someone is gonna bring me my RAM), unfortunatly I'm not in the states XD. Thank you.

I'd go OCZ value select. Whatever's the cheapest really.

I didn't know not running dual channel would take such a big performance hit. What apps would this apply to?

As what he said the way to go is dual channel and mixing of ram can be a problem

KxK

I think I just took out Corsair. they upped the price 10 bucks :S, unless I find another cheaper site.
