Which ram for overclocked 754 and beyond?

Well, computer upgrades are forcing me to buy a comp at this not so opportune time (gotta love a psu blowing up and taking half your comp with it, combined with a want to play doom3). Anyways, the projected setup is:

socket 754 3000+
1 gig ram
MSI k8n-neo platinum
radeon 9800 pro

since cpu/vid/mobo will be swapped in like less than a year (as soon as pci-e and dualcore 939s are available), and I DON'T want to change the memory, I'm looking to go all out right now on memory. Obviously corsair XL tops the list, but OCZ EB (like 3700 EB), is rumored to be better for overclocked AMD systems? Which would be a better buy, or would it be better to just save ~$50 and go with like corsair XL instead? I plan/hope to run at 250mhz +

You don't need fancy timing memory on an A64. By fancy, I mean 2-2-2-5 Corsair stuff. That stuff is way too expensive for no noticeable benefits. Solid 2-3-3-6 memory will suffice. Just make sure it's from a good brand. OCZ EB would also be a good pick. You might want to get the PC3500 EB stuff and overclock it, since if I remember right, the PC3700 EB stuff was only available in limited quantities and a good deal more expensive. If I'm wrong about the price, good deal then. Just don't be lured by the very exprensive ultra low latency memory.

Seems a lot of money to throw at a computer you're going to upgrade in "less than a year" as you put it.

Maybe you should consider a socket 939 board and cpu now, rather than spend money on s754 THEN s939.

The ram speeds depend on how far you want to go.

PC3200 = 400
PC3500 = 433
PC3800 = 466
PC4100 = 500
PC4400 = 533

You want a speed of memory that's close to your overclocked FSB speed for maximum stability. It's entirely possible you may be able to ger DDR400 or 433 above and beyond 450, but it;s a risk, the memory will get hot, and this may shorten the lifetime.

Well, if I go socket939 now, the cpu/mobo will be useless when I turn around looking for pci-e and dualcore. So since i'm upgrading 2x, I'm going best bang for the buck items right now on cpu/mobo/vid, which is socket754 and radeon9800pro.

As for the memory, corsair XL is like $320, and will go to 250+ with amazing timings. OCZ EB is slightly less, but I'm not sure how good the EB3500 memory is in comparison to the corsair XL, and for only $20 for a part I plan to use through at least 1 upgrade, I'm thinking the $20 might be worth it, as I've heard all A64 systems respond very well to lower latencies.

the corsair will go up as high as 275ish with a slight voltage bump, and still good timings (like 3-3-3 or so), whereas the EB will do roughly the same, but corsair XL just seems like a better name to me. I dunno :(
