Which Radeon 9600 Pros are Compatible with Zalman ZM80A-HP Heatsinks?

Has anyone tried the big Zalman heatsinks on a 9600 pro? The pcb of the card must have holes near the stock heatsink to mount the Zalman. I've checked websites, asked Zalman, asked manufacturers, but I cannot discern if Sapphire, PowerColor, ATI Retail, and/or Tyan 9600 Pros are compatible. Thanks for any help.

Usually newegg has good pics of the video cards. All those you mentioned have the 2 holes for mounting the heatsink.

Thanks Viper. I did look at the pics at Neweggg, but was still unsure after looking. As far as I can make out, the two holes, or posts, or mounts in the pictures might be for the heatsink, which would be good, or just for the fan, with the heatsink itself being glued on. That would be bad. Powercolor emailed me that their 9600 Pro has holes for the fan, not the heatsink. Since sales are final at Newegg, I wanted to be more sure before I ordered.

The heatsink is secured to the board usually by 2 or 4 rubber grommet type things, and you squeeze those together to pull off the heatsink\fan.

It should mount just fine.

Great, that's the info I was looking for. My radeon 8500 had two screws but they went into the heatsink assembly, not the pcb, so I couldn't use the Zalman. Didn't want to make that mistake twice. Thanks!

Good to know, Mingon, that's the one I am probably getting. The little fan on my 8500 is surprisingly loud and drives me nuts, that is mostly why I'm upgrading.

how does the fan attach to the heatsink?

the only difference between zm80a and zm80c is that zm80c is compatile with heatsink right? but i was looking at zm80c in store and didn't see any holes on top heatsink.

also will any 80mm attach or do you have to use zalman fan?

I don't know about the ZM80C, but the ZM80A is a heatpipe cooler with a big heatsink that replaces the standard heatsink & fan. There is no way to attach a fan to it as it is meant to work without one.

BTW, in the Newegg reviews of the ATI retail 9600 Pro, one guy says there are no heatsink mounting holes and he is limited to a glue-on replacement heatsink, which would rule out the ZM80A. The pic of that one appears to show the same two little posts though as on the Sapphire, Powercolor, etc. . Mingon has it working so I guess this guy is wrong and guessing without trying it...

You have to use the smaller of the heatblocks but as long as the fan has the little pegs for holding the heatsink down your OK. As a side not the 9600 nonpro should work with the zm50. The 9600pro even at 500mhz barely heats up the zm80a

Thanks again for the info, Mingon. BTW, do you think it's ok to use Artic Silver instead of the thermal paste that comes with the ZM80A?
