hi,
in a few weeks time i will b upgrading my Duron1GHZ to an Athlon XP1800.
i want a Quiet or quiet capable HSF that will cool the XP1800 well.

i was thinking of a Tt Volcano7+ set to quiet mode.
the price of any HSF that u suggest must be equal to or below the price of the Volcano7+

as for case ventilation, that will not b an issue. i have 6 80mm fans & a 92mm fan.

thanx in advance

People who own the V7+ have remarked that, even on Quiet, it is loud and annoying. I'd be more inclined to get one of the Taisol CGK760172's from here and fit an 80mm fan, since it is 80mm long anyway. The heatsink/fan unit and a spare 80mm fan fall within your budget. You will need to figure out the fan attachment for yourself, so keep that in mind.

It's too bad you cant get a GC68. I do agree with the above post. TV7+ under quiet mode is still too loud.

I've heard SVC will introduce a copper version of GC68 soon. Can't wait.

I just put one of these POSes on my XP1700+ and it's loud as heck even on the quietest setting. Medium and Fast are a crime against man and nature but even quiet is loud and abrasive. Stay away from this POS heatsink.

BoomAM, a low RPM 80mm fan mounted to an AX-7 would suit your needs. I'm running an AX-7 w/ an Enermax thermo-adj. fan and it's quiet, hope this helps :)

hey man,

get a zalman CNPS-6000Cu... i'm using on on my xp1800+ and on silent mode it only runs around 10deg above case temp, plus the way it works is that you can replace the northbridge HSF with just a heatsink (if your mobo has one)

plus you can get it, case sound insulation, quiet case fans etc from www.quietpc.co.uk

I agree. I have an AX-7 and a 2300 RPM NMB with AS3 on a XP 1600. There aren't that many 80 mm fans that are slower turning but it does a decent job of cooling. My load temps don't go above 50 C and idle is about 43-45.

be careful with low RPM fans and the AX-7. the AX-7 is a kick ass heatsink, but requires a substantial amount of air to pass over it, due to its large surface area. my panaflo is barely getting the job done--it just doesn't move enough air. if you have a well-ventilated case, you can get away with the AX-7 + panaflo or pabst 80 mm. otherwise, get a nice sunon or decently powerful fan.

You could get a Thermalright SLK-800 and equip it with a slow 92 mm fan. I fit a 92 mm sleeve bearing Globe Fan on it. I got the fan from the Maxtop case I got from NewEgg.com. I'm getting 50.00 C on my CPU recorded from the thermal sensor on my Abit KR7A-Raid. My case temperature is 34.00C. I only have one 80mm exhaust right next to the CPU and my PSU fan and my northbridge fan. It's loud enough to bother me, but if I put any music on it goes away. I'm not sure your tolerance, but I had a Dell XPS T500 before, so I think I'm a bit sensitive. The Thermalright SLK-800 is cooling a Athlon XP 1700+ not overclocked. I'm still not sure if my temperatures are good enough to warrunt my purchase. I am living in California in the Bay Area and it has been pretty hot this summer, which is when I got it, so your United Kingdom climate might be better.

Gotta love those Pabst Blue Ribbon fans. ;)

I love my Alpha 8045/PC Power and Cooling Silencer (rated at 20 db and 28 cfm) combo on my XP1800+ non OC. I've even seen a guy put the Papst 19.4 cfm, 12 db fan on his 8045 for the same chip. My setup cools fine. Maybe it's because the fan blows off of the hs instead of on it like the other hs.

I just bought a GC68 and I plan to use one of those 18 db, 18 cfm NMB fans on a non OC 750 Duron. This will probably work, but I wouldn't put it on something like a 1800+.

7 case fans and you want a quiet HSF, haha :D That is funny dude.

You really seem to have 2 many case fans, you must not like having open PSU connectors :D

You could likely eliminate 1/2 of those fans and give your PSU a break in its heat generation.

Thermalright AX-7 with Pabst or Panaflo 80mm fan.

And seriously, 7 case fans would drown all but the loudest Delta heatsink fans.

thanks for the replys.

To start off. there are now 5 fans (all 80mm), all silent ys-tech ones (20dBa) and there are plenty of power connectors available.
Its quieter now than my old pc, which had one 80mm fan and a baycooler.
I also replaced my mobo fan with a zalman heatsink. and have my crystal orb running at 7v.
The case i have is a cheiftec scorpio full tower, so you can check the fan locations if you want on their website. for those of you who cant be arsed, theres 3 80mm intakes, and 2 exhausts next to the CPU.

Secondly. i brought a Thermalright SLK-800 and another silent YS-Tech fan for it. it cools amazing. and is quiet. you can barely hear the fans running. the only sound sources that can be considered "loud", are the hard drives.

How the hell do you fit a 92mm fan on the SLK-800. its only ment for 60/80mm fans.

All in all. my PC is quiet, has very good ventilation and my xp1800 runs cooler than my old duron1ghz w/volcano2.

I don't know if you can get it, but I've been looking at the CoolerMaster one with the heat pipes on the side. Anyone have any input on this one?

Well I got my GC68 yesterday. It was labelled GC136 or some such. Anyway its not cooling any better than my Vantec 6027D.

GC68
case temp 33C, CPU at 65C while Folding@home.

VAntec 6027D
case temp 35C, CPU 65C while folding @ home
cas was open here though...

so the GC68 is just not cooling any better on my 1800+ than the Vantec. Today is not as hot as the last few days though and I want to see how it cools when the room temp reaches 80F because the vantec pushed me to ~75C.

Its stinking quiet though. Man its laughable. No more 60mm fans for me bud! Its making my dual celerons sound like noise makers. It gonna throw some low power 80s on the dually as soon as I find some. mmmmm, silence.

But for my 1800+ Im going to have to get a damn wind tunnel to cool this thing. 8C over case temp, bah. I have barely seen 30C over case temp. Im always high so you MUST not have loaded that thing.

I just replaced my Speeze Big Rock II with the SVC GC68. My temps went up a degree C or so, but it's much easier on the ears. I can actually hear my drives spinning now (not the heads but the platters). Anyway, I am running my XP at 1.7GHz and 1.80v actual, and my socket temps are a little above 55C under load (case 30-32C, ambient 23-24C). So forget about extreme OC, but 1.7GHz or so is attainable.

The GC68 has the worst clip known to man. Nearly speared a soyo dragon plus to death trying to install it.

I have one of the Arctic Cooling HSFs now. My temps are a lot higher (well within tolerances) with the Arctic Cooling HSF but the machine is silent now. Highly recommended so long as you don't overclock.

The clip on the gc68 isn't bad at all, provided you remove the fan before trying to install it, make sure the crossbar is in the right set of fins- piece of cake. I've dealt with a lot worse, that's for sure...

It's a moot point, anyway, BoomAM sez they aren't available in the UK. From the sources he listed and the price he's willing to pay, the taisol is probably the best bet. While they are audible, they're not nutso loud, either, and they work very well.....

Edit- didn't realize this was a resurrected thread-- glad you like your new Zalman, BoomAM. If it's still louder than you might like, try it without the front case fans. They really do less than you think....

To those who got your GCs, how is SVC now? Reseller Ratings still have them down

SVC is good in my book, ordered about two dozen GC68s from them so far as well as a slew of other things.

Also, got two GC68s on my XP2100s, 55C ea...not bad for a $6 HSF combo...quiet as hell too
