I'm having trouble deciding which PSU to get, whether the Modstream 520w from OCZ or the 500W Bluestorm from Forton.

What do you guys think?

The OCZ is nice that it's modular and all but it's rated at 26A on the +12V rail while the Bluestorm has dual +12V rails with each rated at 15A.

 
How much are you willing to spend?

The best PSU out there right now is the seasonic s12 600W. It is about $150 and it is a shame it is not sleeved!
 
This is supposedly one of the better power calculaters

Questions of how much you wish to spend? It quiet a top priority?
Do you really need 12Vx2?

The best quality price point would be from the FSP Group (Sparkle or Fortron).

Honestly use that calculater at 100% not the default 80%.

Last week i opened, cleaned and changed out the fan in a FSP400-60PFN(Fortron).
It was used about 6hours a day for 3 years. All the caps looked good and the fan was changed, because it was time too. This unit will go in an non-clocked AMD 3200 754pin
build for a family member. She only has 4 fans,6200 & 512. The +12V gives me 3A cushion at 100% by the above calculator.

EDIT: If you really want NASCAR performance on the dual 12V rails. Like a little spot welding while gamming get the ZIPPY, PSM-6600P SATA, $186.50 at the Egg(can be had cheaper) 3.3V@30A,5V@30A,12V1@26A,12V2@20A. This is true muscle beach stuff.
A 700watt is on offer but the price is truely breath taking, but it can be used to jump-start
the car. J/K, J/K 😛

Get the best FSP Group you can afford.
 

actually the debate as to which is better between dual or single 12v rail is just that still a debate with no discernable answerr@@!!

I would venture to say they both have there advantages and disadvantages..

I've been looking at the OCZ Modstream just because of the neatness it will bring to my case. Right now I have an Enermax 460 watt and my case is a mess. All the reviews i've read have said the OCZ was a great PSU as well.

I did some research into the Fortron brand...I would second what JBDan just posted!!
 
That was all a ruse...yet until recently I had been using the OKIA 420....
But with count them...8 fans(not counting the vidcard or the CPU fan) and 3 harddrives and a 6800 vid card and a dvd burner..etc...
I started getting weird clicking noises from the harddrives all of which are relatively new and a few reboots here and there....

So I didtched the OKIA for what I call THE BEAST!!!

I haven`t changed my mind that much!!

Those PSU`s you get when you buy a computer for the most part are just that a PSU designed to work.
for the average computer user with no aspirations to have more than 1 h/d drive a cheap videocard and a floopy drive with a generic intel or Amd approved fan they work well!

I had my OKIA for over 2 years.....
When I purchased my present case the PSU that came with it was dead...
I only wanted the case anyways; so I did not make an issue of it!!

I knew in time as I kept adding stuff to my computer that eventually I would need to get a quality PSU!!

As I have stated many times even the cheapo PSU`s have guidelines they have to adhere to...thus they will work for the average user.

I am not the average user! But I wanted to see how far I could push this OKIA 420...with 18amps on the 12v rail....

Well the present specs are what it would tolerate!
So I disconnected 2 fans and all was well while my present PSU arrived in 2 days after I ordered it!!

🙂 i was actually referring to you speculating last month that people here must own stock in fortron due to them receiving so many recommendations.

i don't know anything about okia other than it won't be found in my rigs 😛

Fortron because its simply better, more reliable and is rated conservatively. it will provide more power than rated and plus its cheaper.

At the top of this page click on "Guides", type in Fortron and Anandtech's reviews are
all there. Read the second hit. Search FSP Group in the General Hardware Forum only.
There,seemingly more mature users rate the FSP Group very highly. Without worry,i
will use a 400watt Fortron for another 3years, as stated in my first post in this thread.
Not everyone needs nor wants a $100++ PSU. ZIPPYs are still made in Taiwan, all QC
is done in house. They also produce PCP&C and I-STAR(respected server psu).
Many highly rated PSUs are made by OEMs to the spec of the name brand. Lately the
QC has slipped and recently Antec(a respected name)has had it's share of problems.
The chemical Co. that provided the electrolite for a capacitor manufactuare brewed up a very bad batch. Two to three years later these caps are swelling and leaking, causing
amoung other things, voltage spikes at shut down and boot knocking out HDDs and generally raising other havock. All this info is out there, you just got to look.
Go to www.madshrimps.be/, they have a credable PSU round-up. Check out www.zippy.com, take the tour of the factory in Taiwan. I was plodding around their site a month ago and came across the other brand names they provide. It was very late at night and i was pooped, so it was lost, can't find it. But i did see their listing of other PSU brand
names and the two listed above were amoung about 15 in total. Most are for the server market.
At this point in time, i personally would not risk my system to a PSU that is produced by an OEM as they are being profit squeezed by the name they are marketed under.

Most new builders treat the PSU as an after thought:disgust: Never use the pos that comes with the budget case as the PSU is the very:heart😱f the whole system.
I want a Lance Armstrong heart in my PC. Resting rate<40 bpm at rest & able to sustain
200 bpm on a serious climb.
