Which psu of these 6 possibilities would you choose?

Hello,

I need to order a computer for my parents, and it should be as quiet as possible. Another thing is that it must be prebuilt so they can just turn it in if there's a problem, so I've found a good shop here in Denmark where I live, which builds computers with some configuration options.

I'm a little in doubt about which PSU to choose though (the cpu is going to be a i5-3570k and no discrete gpu). I got the following options:

Corsair CX V2 500W PSU ATX 12V V2.3
Corsair CX V2 600W PSU ATX 12V V2.3
Corsair TX V2 650W PSU ATX 12V V2.3
Cooler Master GX Lite 600W PSU ATX 12V V2.3
Chieftec Nitro Series BPS-750C 750W PSU ATX 12V V2.3
Silver Power SP-SS500 500W PSU ATX 12V V2.2

I'm quite convinced I want a Corsair psu as I've owned them myself before, but I'm not sure which one is most quiet?
The 500W is probably going more than good enough in terms of power - but do you think any of the other units are more silent? They're quite close in price, so the price doesn't matter too much.

Thanks 🙂

None, you can get away with an corsair 430CX V2 or an antec 380D easily if its just for your parents with built in graphics.

I have to choose one of these as that's the only options the shop offers unfortunately (it was the best shop I could find offering assembled systems with good components), sorry if I didn't make that clear 🙂

You think there are any differences between these psu's noise wise?

Why not order online and assemble yourself? It's not hard to do if you follow instructions and you'll likely save a lot of money compared to a shop that does it for you.

I assemble my own computers, but this one is for my parents and not for me, so while I could build this one too, it needs to be bought at a place where they can send it in case of problems (in particular if I'm not able to be around to help). It just makes everything easier 🙂

Besides that I don't think the PC would be that much different or better if I could choose everything freely, probably only cpu cooler or psu - but I can always install another cpu cooler if the stock is too noisy, but I think it will be ok? The rest of the PC is like this:

Fractal Design Refine R3 case, i7-3570k cpu (stock cooler), Asus P8Z77-V LX motherboard, 4GB 1600MHz Corsair Vengeance memory, WD Blue 500GB and Samsung 830 128GB SSD.

Also the price is not significantly higher than assembling myself, and they also provide 3 years warranty on the entire computer so that's a plus 🙂

Okay, and would you consider this a quiet psu?

And no need to get the TX V2 650W if noise is the only concern here?

Get the Seasonic built SP-SS500.

According to the few reviews I can find Silver Power is another MaxPoint brand, who also own Tagan. They do mention it's silent but the voltage regulation seems average at best.

But I wonder, is it really a good idea to let a shop that carries no power supplies below 500W build a pc that will struggle to use more than 150W?

Your PC will use like 20% power at most. The fan will not even turn on. It will be silent. The 650 will not be more silent.

If you want your parents to have tech support that isn't you, buy a Dell or HP.

I'm wondering what your parents do with the PC that they need an i5-3570K.

The shop I'm looking at has a good reputation and I know a few friends that have bought their computer there, and they are happy about it - so I don't think the service is worse here than Dell/HP/etc- at least in Denmark.. Dell have been in a few consumer tv programs here (the kinds you don't wanna be in) with quite bad stories.

However, did you think about a specific HP/Dell computer? I'd love to hear if I missed something out 🙂

I've found that there are not really any options for customization and I don't know the components in the computers - so it seems more of a gamble if the computer turns out to be quiet enough. And they also tend to come with a lot of useless preinstalled trials of this and that - which I think is annoyng 🙂

I know the cpu is probably overkill - but that's due to the limited configuration possibilities - not many of the computers have an option to leave out a discrete graphics card, so that reduces the options somewhat. They tend to be more focused on selling gaming computers.

Err... I don't think they ship to Denmark for cheap?

Why wouldn't they? They're both pretty much global brands, I'm sure they have plenty of warehouses or distributors near Denmark, perhaps even in Denmark.

A basic Dell with an i3, 4GB RAM and a 500GB HDD, along with 3-year next business day on-site service costs about 4800 kr. With the basic 1 year remote service, about 900 kr less

You can check out an equivalent HP at http://www8.hp.com/dk/da/products/desktops/index.html?facet=HP-Pavilion-p6

The link didn't work unfortunately but looking on their models I assume it's an Inspiron 660 (http://configure.euro.dell.com/dell...del_id=inspiron-660&c=dk&l=da&s=dhs&cs=dkdhs1 - not sure if that works either 😀) ?

I find that one at 5000 kr. with default config and the on-site stuff - I wasn't aware of that option so that's pretty nice 🙂

However, I still don't feel sure if the noise level will be ok, and there's no SSD - I know that's not strictly necessary but personally I wouldn't want a computer without an SSD anymore, it just feels so fast in daily use, and it stays like that - and then there's all the preinstalled stuff on the Dell. I think it would be nice just having nothing else but Windows installed from the factory.

So while the other computer I looked at cost 6900 kr. including shipping, it's with an SSD worth of 1050 kr., so the more fair difference is about 850 kr. and then the Dell got the on-site service..

I don't really know, I feel more confident that the Komplett computer (thats the name of the other shop) is going to be a success because I know it's a good case with sound dampening material, a good psu, motherboard, memory, etc - but it's of course pricier so yeah, not sure what is best 🙂

Denmark has now made sufficient advances in development to have their own dell site http://www.dell.dk/ 🙂

Of the ones you list I would probably go for the Corsair CX500, just because I don't really know this SilverPower brand. The Chieftec will probably be the quietest I think, but 750W is really stupid overkill.

Can't you ask them to buy some cheap BeQuiet at another shop and put that in there? 350W would be more than sufficient and they do live up to their name I have found.

The odd thing is that they do have a lot more hardware in their shop but they only sell assembled computers with the specific components they list in their configurator - I did ask them if they could install other components but they don't want to do that for some reason 🙁

OP: I'm not sure why you are so scared of noise? With no GPU and no overclock, NONE of those PSUs will make ANY noise. It will literally be silent. You would need to get a really crappy PSU for it to make noise with that load.
