Well as i have just sold my Q-Tec 550W psu along with my epox 8rda3+ and xp1700 cpu, im wanting to start again, but with a good psu unit, the only problem i have is which one.
i have read the amandtech review about the psu's but i wondered if you guys and gals, could tell me what you are using.
i read in the review that the 3.3v and the 5v lines are the more important so i gather i have to have a good psu for those lines..
any sugguestions or comments?

ps. my plan is to buy a barton 2500+ and a nf7-s rev 2 board and use them with my corsair xms 3200LL memory (1 gig of) and use it with my 9700 pro, when i get it back.. im also thinking of buying a thermaltake xaser 3 case, as i had a xaser 2 case and i was impressed by its cooling and ease of putting it together. any further sugguestions? thanks for the help!
 
You can't go wrong with Antec. Other common recommendations are Allied, Enermax, Sparkle, PC Power and Cooling, and Fortron.
 
I'm curious why you got rid of your 8rda3+ mobo? I would think if you're concerned with the 5 and 3.3 volt rails you should get a psu
which separates the lines like with the Antec truepower series. You can get them in 330, 380, 430, 480watt, etc.

i didnt like the board, it wasnt reliable nor was it any good for overclocking, it kept giving me errors and i just wasnt happy with its stability.. the nf7-s rev 2 board i have is much better with the same memory, cpu etc, i just prefer that..
im also getting rid of the epox 8rda+ board i also had, as thats not as good as i thought it would be too.
would spending about £100 on a psu be over the top? what wattage would be best to get? i was told before, its not the amount of watts, its the quality of them..
 
If you're a bit short on $, the Allied 400W from Newegg is awesome. I read the reviews and got one. It's like a solid top brand (eg Sparkle) 350W. My rails are dead on, and the thing's fans are as quiet as the Panaflo I put into my old PSU.
 
Not all of them, I've had a lot of crappy, noisy Antecs, but those were all low end units. Antec makes a wide range of supplies for various budgets, their cheap stuff has been junk.

Strange, I guess you got a bad board cause I have the 8rda3+ and it overclocks very well with my 2500+ chip. What are you getting for a multiplyer and fsb for your Abit board using your 2500+?

I haven't played around enough with the board yet, but it's been very stable at 2.2ghz (11x200mhz) without a reboot and everything has worked very well so far. I have the corsair PC3200C2 ram.
 
well i was using a xp1700 cpu (one of the downgraded models) i was having no end of problems with it.. at 12.5 x 166 it was giving me hassles as it would crash randomly and it just was not stable at all. i had also tried it at 200 x 10 giving me 2ghz but it was still unstable with the same voltage as i mention with the abit board. it just really wasnt playing ball with me at all. i also have the cosair xms dual ddr kit memory and its fine with my girl friends abit nf7-s board with the same xp1700 cpu.. it clocks to 2.2 ghz fine, but its been rather warm here of late and temps have been going up to 50C or above slightly, im trying to keep it below the 50C mark. and im only using 1.55v for the cpu so i figured 2.1ghz was good enough (200 x 10.5) as it needed 1.6volts to get it going at 2.ghz (200 x 11) i figured my girl friend wouldnt notice the extra 100mhz anyway so i hadnt bothered making it go faster..
im aiming for a abit nf7-s rev 2 board with a barton xp2500 or if the price comes down low enough i might consider the barton xp2800. im having to build this one from scratch so its going to take me a little while..
as the same with one of the web sites that reviewed the 8rda3+ (i think it was hardocp) they said 50% chance of overclocking wasnt enough for them to try and they didnt bother because of what had been writen about the board. i guess i was just unluckly with both my epox boards.. not to worry.
 
I like the Enlight power supplies, particularly the 420W unit. They are made by High Power and are also marketed as Chieftec, and Thermaltake. $55 shipped from newegg, dual fans, stable power to the rails, 18A to the 12V rail, some higher priced units do offer more there, but the enlight 420W has worked well for me. I am currently running one in two different overclocked AMD systems.
