Which projector for grandparents?

Hi guys, I wanna get my grandparents a projector (perhaps used since they don't care) in the $1k range, or maybe like $1.2k or something. Don't know if that's too much? The main thing they need is that it's bright as hell in the daytime. They currently have an HTPC (thanks to yours truly, hehe) hooked up to a 60" plasma, but the TV and stand are taking up like 1/3rd of their room, so I wanna sell it and get a projector. Is there a really nice bright one that will display either 1920x1080 or 1600x900 for that price?? 🙂

How about just wall mounting the TV to reclaim the floor space. Projectors in bright rooms are not a good idea. If you can't wallmount the existing one, you can find cheap 60" plasmas now that will mount.

Well, the main reason I wanna get rid of the plasma is because something happened to it and it's not really bright anymore. All the settings are cranked high up, but it looks like minimum brightness (cell light).

So you don't think that we'll be able to get good results with any projector if the room is bright?

This is about as bright as you're going to get for that range. I have a fairly bright room, and though the naysayers love to talk tough, it works just fine.

Still, you WILL see better results with an LCD or plasma during the daytime, its just FOR ME I'd take the (IMO minor to moderate) image degradation as a tradeoff for a significantly bigger panel (50" vs 135").

How far would the projector be from the wall? What screen size are we talking about?

edit: and yes, the model of projector matters a LOT. I had a Mits HC6500 and while it was great in my old house, where my current projector was it was unwatchable during the daytime, where my panny is solid.

Ive got this one and it is a light cannon. I use it during the day and at night and it always has a great bright vibrant picture. Has big time hours for the bulb, 2 year warranty, and if you should need a bulb they are cheap. I wont be getting rid of it anytime soon thats for sure.

Its brand new, and half the price youre looking to spend at $599. This PJ has 2800 Lumens which the higher that number the brighter the PJ will be. If you dont get this one just keep that in mind when youre looking for one and get the highest number you can find.
