Which processor should I go with?

Edit: Everything is new in the box....

Looking to do 2 new builds
(1) Gaming/HTPC in server room for 120 inch 1080p screen
(2) Home Office/Gaming PC

I have an i5-2500k ($100 at Microcenter), i5-3570k ($189 + $40 mobo discount at Microcenter) and an i7-4770k ($190 at Staples with PM)

I have 2x Asus P8Z77-V Pro mobos and an MSI Z87-G45 for the i7.

I read this review and starting thinking that maybe the i7 is not really worth it.

Wondering if I should just stick to the i5-2500k and i5-3570k and sell off the i7-4770k. But I might try and sell the i5-2500k first on ebay. It has recently sold for as high as $230 (special needs for discontinued processor)?

What would you do?

Wow, when did Micro Center have the i5 2500k for $100 😱

I would sell the 2500k. 2500k prices are about as high as they will ever get, so I would try to capitalize on that while you still can.

i7 is not worth it in my opinion either, I'd almost rather have the 3570k or 4670k even though I paid $199 for it at MC. Only reason I am keeping it is because I expect it to hold decent resale value and sooner or later I can sell it for a small profit or breakeven. I would say it's a tossup between getting rid of the i5 2500k or i7 4770k. If the i7 4770k is still NIB, I'd say try to sell it for $300.

Everything is still unopened and new in the box. I figured it would be a tossup between selling the 2500k and the 4770k.

My receipt says November 17, 2012 for the 2500k sale.

I'd say put them both up for sale. If you can get $170 or more for i5 2500k, take it. I wouldn't let go of a NIB 4770k for less than $300, especially if you have to pay shipping and other (ebay/paypal) fees, which can easily add up to $40+, in which case I'd rather keep it.

Figures... I was out of the country 🙁

Hoping they will do the same for 3570k in the future :awe:

If you can, sell the 4770K for 250$+ and buy a 4670K at MC for 200 😛

I wouldn't go through all the trouble unless you can get $300 for it. You would barey make any profit after paying tax on the 4670k and shipping/fees on the 4770k.

But also sell the 2500K.

I guess you are saying that I could make about $50 selling the 4770k and put it towards a nicely priced 4670k which should result in about the same performance.

At first that made sense. Then, as I started looking into it more, I started thinking about the hyperthreading and the size of the L3 cache which are the main differences.

The 4770k would likely be a good candidate for my home office b/c the users (me included) tend to leave a lot of applications running all the time at once. It's not clear to me what the real-world difference will be between the 6mb and 8mb L3 cache.

Sticking with the 4770k definitely makes sense, especially if you plan on keeping it for a while.
