Which processor is faster?

I am trying to decide between the 2 laptops and can only keep one.
Laptop 1:
Acer Aspire 5000
-AMD Turion ML-34@1.8Ghz
-System chipset is SIS 760GX
-1GB RAM
-15.4" Screen.

Dell M700
-Intel Dothan M755@2Ghz
-System chipset is the 955.
-1GB of RAM
-12.1" Screen.

Which one has better energy conservation?
Which one performs better in games like UT2004? The Dell seems to move smoother than the Acer Aspire.

I think they'd probably be pretty comparable; I haven't seen many direct laptop processor comparisons, though.

The T64's are faster than the Pentium M's, at same or similar clocks. Like comparing P4 to A64, really, although we are looking at low power versions of them.

Uh...NO.

The Intel is faster per clock and has a faster clock. It probably eats less power too. The difference is that AMD systems usually have better integrated graphics.

Why Dothan? It's outdated.

Dothan > Turion. Both clock-for-clock and on battery life.

Dothan may well be "outdated" but mine is plenty fast :laugh:

Clock for clock, they are very comparable in general usage. In gaming however, the Turion is ahead, although the clock speed advantage of that Dothan over the Turion would probably nullify the difference. The Turion will use less power at idle, but more under load, so the best choice from an energy efficiency perspective will be determined by how you intend to use the laptop.

The Pentium M's aren't based on Pentium 4's; they were based on Pentium III's and the current Core architecture was derived from them. However, considering how many revisions it had to go through to get to Core now, and considering Turions are based on Athlon 64's, I would say they're pretty comparable.

Basically it looks like turion is slightly faster and dothan has slightly better battery life. The two they compared were at the same clock speed, so really you'd probably be better off going with the Dothan since it's 200MHz faster (assuming everything else is similar and the price is the same). Plus, the Dothan is slightly better on battery life, which is what you asked about in the first place. It also has a lower TDP; the turion is 35w, the Dothan is 7.5-21w (probably depending on speedstep or whatever they call it).

I have no idea how dothan and turion compare, but one thing is for sure - idle power consumption is much, much more important than load power consumption as far as laptop battery is concerned. Just think about how you use laptops and how many times you push the CPU to max.

Something not mentioned is that chipsets play a factor in power conservation as well.

AFAIK, generally for notebooks, Intel chipsets are the best for saving battery life.

I'd get the Dothan unless you need 64-bit for some reason.

Yeah... not really. Pentium M is NOT a Netburst CPU, it's a PIII retrofit and is the basis of Core Duo and Core 2 Duo. It trounces any AMD mobil solution...
