which processor is better? (P3 or celeron)

i was checking out some socket 370 processors and noticed something,

1.4ghz celeron with 256k cache, 100mhz bus $43
1.0ghz P3 with 256k cache, 133mhz bus $91

i dont see too much difference between the two except the celeron has 100mhz bus and is faster, cache is the same size, could you expect the celeron to be a better performer? 400mhz more i would think would over come the 133mhz bus speed as opposed to 100mhz, i am also talking stock speed and not overclocked.

both are fcpga-2 processors also. Anyone with input would be appreciated.
 
The Tualatin Celeron line is nearly identical with the Coppermine Pentium III line except for being limited on the 100 MHz bus, being manufactured on a 0.13 micron scale, features Data Prefetch Logic, and has a slightly different voltage regulation. It is this last bit that makes it incompatible with many motherboards. However, there are converters that you can buy cheap that will make it work for you.

Personanly I have a 1.1 GHz Tualatin Celeron (100 FSB) that I have o/c to a 1.46 GHz (133 FSB) on a slot-1 Asus P3V4X motherboard. It runs great for me.

That would be true if you are speaking of the P4 based Celerons. But the 1.4GHz Celeron is a P3 (Tualatin) based chip and it performs very close to a P3.

I'd personally take the Celeron in this case as the higher clock speeds will be more beneficial than the faster bus. The Celeron is also considerably cheaper in this case too.

I might actually want to see if my old BX board can use one with a slocket if they're this cheap now!
 
next question, do you think a board that could take a p3 133mhz bus 1ghz chip take the 1.4ghz celeron?
 
Look up the mob from it's manufacturers website and see if tualatins are supported. You may need a BIOS update. Also, you could possibly overclock that FSB back up to 133Mhz as the board and RAM are already capable of that speed. Even if you can't, the price difference makes the tualatin celery a good deal.
 
Well, to begine with there were FC-PGA2 Coppermines released during the phase out period, so you can get the FC-PGA2 1.0GHz/133MHz P3 in either Coppermine or Tualatin cores!

OK, I did extensive testing with my FC-PGA2 PIII 1000EB (Coppermine) and my Celeron 1.2GHz overclocked to 1480MHz. The PIII 1000EB was faster at many task. The Celeron not only has a slower bus speed, but slower cache as well (in the form of an added cycle of latency).

Later I got a Tulatin Celeron 1100 and overclocked it to 1466MHz/133MHz FSB, and it did far better. The key here seems to be bus speed.

The 1200 is probably less than 50% likely to reach 133MHz FSB (1.6GHz). The 1100 is far more likely to reach 133MHz FSB (1466MHz). So I've always recommended SLOWER Tualatin Celerons, overclocked, due to the memory bus issue.
 
the board is an 815epfv and the version of it is says it wont support the celeron 1.4ghz. I am thinking with an adapter card it would let it support it.

i appreciate all the info.
