Exactly what I was thinking. The others suck.

Only reason to get premium channels is for sports and original programming. No channel even remotely approaches HBO in either category. So HBO. Virtually every HBO show is worth watching, and two of them (The Wire, Deadwood) are the two best shows on TV.

Encore is the best. They play all the good movies from the 80s and 90s with no commercials.

Then get netflix for the same price. No movie channel will approach netflix for quality of movies per month.

well, the real scoop is that I am getting the $39.99 deal for 3 months (mostly because of the NBA playoffs) and I get to select one for free

I had the same wants you do. I had HBO all throughout college and then for several years after I got married. They do have some great original shows (although I think some of them are highly overrated.) But I always thought it was kind of stupid to be paying extra for regular old weekly TV shows when I already have 100+ channels full of those (sure, much of it is crap, but with so many options out there there's more than enough content to satisfy my needs.) If I'm going to be paying extra, I want feature films, not more TV shows.

That's why we finally dropped HBO and got Starz. We've had Starz for probably 4 years now and I'd never consider switching back or adding HBO again. I love being able to flip through and find a ton of solid movie choices. HBO usually gets a few of the biggest 'blockbuster' movies (and will play them virtually wall-to-wall to the point where you're sick of seeing them), but other than that I always thought their movie lineup was weak in comparison with even Showtime, much less Starz/Encore.

Netflix is a nice service and I use that too, but you have to wait for the DVDs to get to you. Starz can satisfy your movie fix quite nicely with a good selection in the interim. And assuming you have a DVR/Tivo it's easy to search through the guides and see what's coming on and record a whole slew of good movies that you can watch at your leisure.
